As I go through blogs in the dofollow blog directory, I run across some interesting blogs.  Some are interesting in a good way, and some are interesting in a bad way.  Some really point out people that are desperate to make money and that leads them to do some really annoying things.

Here are some of the bad blogging practices I see as I review flagged nofollow blogs.

A blog full of advertising banners really does you no good.  You may think that the more banners you have on your site, the better chance you have of someone clicking on that banner, and the better chance you have of making money.  Wrong!

It’s okay to have banner ads on your blog, I have some on this blog.  But, I have seen blogs that are using banners in the header, banners at the bottom of the blog, banners in the left sidebar and banners in the right sidebar.  Plus, banners in the post.

All those banners say to me that the blog owner is trying so hard to make a few bucks that they don’t really care about providing any value to the reader.  The banner clutter is annoying, and it often causes the blog to load very slowly.  If your blog is slow to load due to too many graphics, people will leave your blog without even having a look.

Again, it’s okay to put a few banner ads on your site, just make it a few banners.  Also, make sure those banners don’t slow the load of your blog too much.

Another thing that really bothers me, and will cause me, as a visitor, to leave your blog, is opening more pages in the background.  I have visited a number of blogs that open another browser window in the background when their blog is opened.  This is annoying to me, but tolerable.  But, a few blogs will open more than one window.  Then when you close a window, another window is opened, and when you exit the blog yet another window is opened.

When I see this nonsense happening, I just automatically close all those stupid windows and will never buy anything from your blog, and will probably not even read your blog.  When new windows are opened like that, they are opened in a new browser, which uses more computer resources, which can slow a computer to a crawl.  I have even seen it lock up a PC.

Why would you want to make visitors mad at you?  Of course you don’t want to upset your visitors, so don’t do it.  I suggest you don’t open any windows in the background, even on exit.  If you want to present something to a visitor on exit, there are programs that will pop up a box when they attempt to leave.  I suggest you do this instead of opening a browser window.

These are a few blogging practices you should avoid.

Thank you to those that are using the dofollow blog directory and are reporting blogs that are nofollow.

Have to agree with you, banners and pop ups are really annoying.

I hate it when you leave a web site and are hit with new window, after new window being opened. I’ve had a few where I have had to open Task Manager and close the browser to get out of the constant new windows opening.

The reviews are very interesting. These tips serve as a guide of good bloggers. Blogs or sites with a lot of banner ads is to make us less comfortable. The presence of banner ads should be proportional. Slow loading sites should also be avoided. Thanks for your sharing.

    Hi

I am ok with sites with lots of banners, ads as long as the owner design the site properly and the site doesnt look cluttered

  5. AJ from Best Wordpress Themes on May 4th, 2010 6:56 pm

Banners are really annoying. If I arrive at a site and all I see is google adense and banners everywhere I leave right away. But ultimately it really depends on your site…Some sites are there just to try and get those extra clicks, and sometimes it works.

  6. sosiaalinen media on May 5th, 2010 1:54 am

I have too few adds in my blog but I try to keep them on the side. I really hate blinking adds, pop-up adds and background adds. One other thing is people who have music or sounds on their websites. These are definately no-no for me.

I think that adds that really work for me are the ones that are done for that site only. They might even be a part of the site´s graphic elements.

  7. Andy from FirstFound on May 5th, 2010 7:00 am

If you think blogs that open one solitary new window are slightly annoying, wait until you come across a zombie popup.

    “*blog opens new window*

    Buy things!

*I click the X to turn it off*

    *window opens new window*

No, you can’t just close it. I’m begging you to buy things! Click Cancel and BUY THINGS!

*I try to click that off*

Sorry Dave. I can’t let you do that Dave…”

Those things fill me with unquenchable rage.

Really too many banner ad displays will defeat the purpose and will get you nowhere.

Most of the blogs online today are form making money and that is why they are full of advert.

  10. kreuzfahrten on May 5th, 2010 2:53 pm

The advertisement shouldn’t be annoying unless you won’t get enough of really quality traffic.

There seem to be programs out there that will create multiple sites for people whereby they capture so many words, then link back to your site. To me, that’s still scraping, although those folks say it’s not because it’s giving people attribution for what they’ve written. I disagree because it happens almost immediately after I’ve posted, so it has the potential to take away from me. At least that’s how I feel

  14. Auto Transport from American Auto Shiping on May 6th, 2010 8:22 am

It isn’t so much the banners that I find annoying as it is the blinking, crawling, flashing banners. Visual clutter is not good in any form of advertisement, be it print, television, or online. Even millenials like to see clean lines and simpler layouts, despite their short attention spans.

  15. joe from St. Petersburg movers on May 6th, 2010 11:22 am

There are some weird blogs out there. Everyone thinks they are an SEO and they love putting their face on their site.

Thanks for listing all the do-follow blogs here. This made my work simple. We too have an dofollow blog with us

  17. Netter Kingdom on May 7th, 2010 5:12 am

In my opinion, by installing a do-follow the logo, it means we are committed to provide comment back to anyone who commented on our blog. Is not that right? But that’s just my opinion only.

    Nice article.

  21. Fairy tail episode 29 on May 7th, 2010 1:31 pm

    I don’t mind blogs with a billion advertisements as long as their not;

    1) Noise/speaker ads- these seriously piss me off and i leave in less then 3 seconds

    2) When I click a topic it opens and ad- this is garbage and ruins the whole web experience.

So to people with sites like this think about changing that your bounce rate will dramatically improve.

    anyway thats my 2 cents.

  22. Free Articles Directory Submission on May 7th, 2010 2:45 pm

I totally agree with your post. A lot of these blogs are just ridiculous. So many ads you can’t even find the article.

  23. chandan from work at home jobs on May 9th, 2010 5:15 am

Yes that right putting load of banner ads is not good on our blog. It take too much loading time as well as our visitors also do not like to browse blogs which are load of sponsored advertisement.

  24. Bit Doze on May 9th, 2010 10:10 am

Totally agreeing with you it is very annoying to see only publicity on a blog also much of them has pop-ups, this is horrible.

  25. oempak on May 9th, 2010 1:21 pm

I totally agree with you, the more banner ads the more you want to close that site. True, it’s reaaally annoying !

  26. Fairy tail episode 29 on May 9th, 2010 1:55 pm

Some new ways some blogs advertise as well is by taking you to a YouTube video with sound? This happen to anyone else?

  27. Affiliate Talk on May 10th, 2010 7:52 am

You are absolutely correct. These are nothing but MFA (Made for adsense) sites which contains little or no content, with only intention being to make money without offering anything valuable to readers.I put only adsense ads and text link ads on my blog and they hardly affect the load time as i use a very simple fast loading wordpress theme.

  28. Donald on May 10th, 2010 7:58 am

When I see a site with that many banners I often just think it’s a spam site to try and make money and not really contribute anything or allow comments.

  29. Learning Centre on May 10th, 2010 8:01 am

Thanks for the tips, I have recent made my own blog site and hope not to make those mistakes. I guess again that there are only few people with the passion to provide something raw and satisfying for their visitors and than there are others who simply want to make the dollar bills

  30. Ian on May 12th, 2010 12:15 am

I’m amazed how many blogs out there smother you with banner ads, I have never clicked on any banner add, ever! I appreciate that they are trying to make a buck but over doing it just screams “scam” or “no substance”.

  31. Horse Gifts on May 12th, 2010 4:17 am

I think the biggest mistakes bloggers make is not finding a balance between content and advertisements. Too much content you are leaving money on the table, too many ads, and readers tune out.

  32. Damian from Cartoon Games on May 12th, 2010 3:06 pm

I agree, some people are just way to desperate to make even a few cents on adsense. Hard work gets you there, not thousands of banners. This is blunt, but if you want to make money on the internet you have to make it seem like you don’t want to. Otherwise people will think you’re just using them, and they’ll stop reading your blog.

  33. Rich from protein shakes on May 13th, 2010 7:08 am

I hve a lot of banners on my site but these are all relted to the post/topic or offering some value to the user like a special offer. The main goal for the blog is to make money but I like to think the articles and information also helps my users with their training routines / diets etc.

  35. SEO Birmingham on May 16th, 2010 9:23 am

Great post mate, I have suffered many errors and problem that you have put up here. I just think blogging as a guest blogger is definitely a way forward now.

  36. John from SEO Services Greensboro NC on May 17th, 2010 7:13 am

I completely agree about the banners! The blog is for content and community interaction, not to shamefully plug the service or products offered (although there’s roundabout ways of still sneaking it in there without being too confrontational).

I also appreciate that you mentioned opening extra browser windows. If I navigate to a blog or website and it tries to force open other windows, or annoying pop-up boxes that say something like “Do you really want to leave this page?” when you try to go back, I mentally blacklist it straight away. I suppose there are some gullible people who will be all over those pop-ups like a winning lotto ticket, but the average net-savvy user is going to hate you for it.

  37. pocket folder on May 17th, 2010 9:55 am

If a blogger is at his initial stage he will focus on making more money by ads and will pay less attention to the content of the blog but as the time passes he will get to know that content is king.

  38. Bee from Webinar Services on May 17th, 2010 3:53 pm

I think that some people make their blogs dofollow, and then soon after they are accepted into these directories, they make them nofollow. I have see a LOT of blogs in do follow directories that were really nofollow.

  39. donkeyB on May 18th, 2010 12:47 am

Many banners don’t relate the sites, and they make me annoyed. When I see them, I immediately want to kick them away from the sites, or turn off my computer right away.
On the contrary, there’s still have some ads which are truly interesting

  40. Scott from Link Building Services on May 19th, 2010 4:08 am

Hey I really feel blogs are for either keeping your views or accepting or having other’s views and these advertisements or banners which just arise like that in between whenever I click makes my blogging experience very bad. There should some limit for this. It shouldn’t be that whenever we try going to some link a pop up window appears.

  41. Katrina from Casque Modulable on May 20th, 2010 1:24 am

1 link = 100 words but you really need to focus on the content for SEO purpose. Your blog must have at least 10 pages before starting linking. Then you aim at 100 pages to feed properly search engines : visits will follow according to your positioning.

  42. Paul on May 20th, 2010 3:19 am

I can consider myself like the average net-savvy user and blame the banner poping without ever even notice it that is paradoxical, but, there is no law in it. Not fill to much, and before internet, my imagination of the nasty filthy internet expansion television is slow-surely promoting like, all stranger look the same and have the same invader-indifferent look so much those zillons of shit pages on the web.

  43. JBCool from Johor Bahru on May 20th, 2010 8:23 am

  44. Office Condos Alabang on May 20th, 2010 10:16 am

This article should be a good reference for those abusive in banners and ads. Anything that is to much can cause undesirable outcome towards the receiver. I hope someday there should be an implemented standard and professional protocol on this, that is based on professional ethics.

  45. troy polamalu jersey on May 21st, 2010 1:30 am

I have visited a lot of blogs, it seems to be ture of what you mentioned. They are really many blogs are not very meaningful for the visit, and I think the blogger should create some highly qualified articles for the visitors to read and enjoy.

  46. payday uk on May 25th, 2010 7:47 am

Definitely using banner excessively looks bad and annoying. I agree with you that we should ensure those banners don’t slow the load of our blog too much.

Thanks for the post and great directory! :)

  49. Jake from Hypnosis on May 27th, 2010 3:04 pm

You’re right, when it comes to banner adverts less is definitely more. When you have too many ads on your blog the reader will just block them out or leave. Both are result you don’t want.

  50. Sterling from Home Based Business Ideas on May 27th, 2010 10:52 pm

Banner blindness is something people bloggers deal with a lot these days. As a result, text link ads are sometimes a safer alternative. Innovation in creating ads will ensure that you convert when you do happen to promote different offers on your blog.

  51. RepManagementFirm on May 29th, 2010 9:29 am

This article is extremely useful for all the webmasters who are new to blogging. Great article, keep up the great work you are doing.

Well I have to say that what is mentioned here in this post is definitely true, I usually research on how to have a successful blog writing and so as to submission. I have to agree with the majority of the posts, that banners and popups are really annoying, usually I turn off popups on the options of whatever search engine I use, it is also the root cause of viruses and rootkits

  53. Geoff Dodd from Residual Income Perth on May 30th, 2010 7:21 am

Thanks for these tips about what NOT to do. I think the template is a critical factor, too. A clear white, 3 column background looks best with few banners like this and good contrast in the text. Content that’s helpful and not just a sales pitch. I must write some good articles now instead of just plugging some ClickBank product offering :)

  57. Paul from make extra money online on June 7th, 2010 7:49 am

I have to admit in the past I have been a bit naughty and placed too many banners and other adverts on my blogs and websites, but I would hope that I am slowly learning to get the balance right.
I have also been in such a rush to get my post completed and move on to the next task, that I have not always posted content as good as I should.
Its mostly over eagerness on the part of inexperienced bloggers who get carried away with the power of their new toy!
I have just given myself a slapped hand and hope you will all forgive me.

That’s because your ultimately being used for the websites statistics in a sense in order to sort of increase their chances of keeping you on the site. The trouble is, the site is bad enough to deal with but yet they hold your arm saying you can’t go. If there was only a button which you could press to slap ;)

  60. Daniel Sharkov on June 11th, 2010 5:19 am

In most of the time I am spending in front of my computer, I’m mostly reading various blogs. Everyday I’m stumbling upon new ones and I’m starting to see that lately people stopped caring about the content, they are posting, rather they are just there for the quick buck. 90% of the blog is covered with all kinds of ads which makes it terrible to read. Of course I’m never clicking those ads, as most people. So all in all in my opinion those kind of blogs can’t make any real money.

It’s not a good look for bloggers to pop windows with unrelated garbage. The worst pages are those that try to auto-install malicious scumware/adware. Eventually, these bloggers will either see the light (by reading posts like this), or they will swear off online money making and go around complaining that it does not work.

  73. Son from small business financing on July 8th, 2010 9:15 am

Quite a few Firefox users are able to bypass ads entirely using the plugin called AdBlock. Of course, a site that overloads on ads so much that you need to block everything probably doesn’t have content worth seeing in the first place. (Hopefully, they allow ads on the sites that DO provide worthwhile content.)

  74. Hotels in Venice on July 9th, 2010 5:25 am

Absolutely right that if you have a blog with full of advertisements then it cannot leave a positive effect on their blog followers. It will be better to use only one banner at top and not use much banners anywhere.

  76. Jim Cintron from Monetize Blog on July 13th, 2010 1:06 pm

I myself am guilty of having one of my pages of my blog utilizing a few too many banners. The banners are for popular traffic exchanges and are appropriately listed on my “Traffic Exchange” Page. They don’t affect my page loads much(1sec page load), and they give a better insight as to the look and feel of each specific Traffic Exchange before deciding to enter.
As far as “dofollow” goes, I use Blogger and set my ‘robots’ file to “index” and “dofollow”. Is this enough to encourage readers to comment or is there another method I could employ? Curious to find out more.

  77. Zac from cheap protein on July 19th, 2010 5:39 am

  84. Ben from Sell Property Fast on August 17th, 2010 4:54 am

Blogging is really a big thing in online business. And having a good blog will make you visitors come back and long for more, so that’s important to take care of your blog. Choose your words and see the taste of your visitors.

  85. Paris accommodation on August 17th, 2010 6:51 pm

Add some banners on your site is not a wrong thing. But when you decide to add, you should consider so carefully. The banners have to suite your site and moderate quantity. If not, your interface site will be messed up.
    Thanks for your note.

I’m a huge fan already, man. You’ve done a brilliant job making sure that people understand where you’re coming from. And let me tell you, I get it. Great stuff and I cant wait to read more of your blogs. What you’ve got to say is important and needs to be read.
