BloggingToTheBank - Make Money Blogging

I really liked this post. Can I copy it to my blog?
Thanks in advance.

Sincerely, Timur.

I recently received that comment on my blog.  I was pleased that Timur liked my blog post and wanted to copy it to his own blog.  You know you’re doing things right when you get blog comments like this - right?

Well, not in this case!  I have more than one blog, and guess what I found?  This same exact comment showed up on more than one of my blogs.  This is a blog spam comment.

I have to admit, I fell for it when I saw it the first time, but of course when I saw it on the second blog I knew it was spam.

The comment was flagged as spam by Spam Karma on my other blog, so someone had already caught on to this spammer and had flagged them as spam.  I also flagged it as spam, so Timur (if that’s the spammers real name) will not be getting as many backlinks as he thought he would.

The lessons learned here are, that you must be using a spam detecting plugin like Askimet or Spam Karma on you blog.  And, you need to be on your guard for these clever comments that appear real and flattering.

Mike

I have received the same comment on one of my post it goes like author: http://www.engel-bedeutung.de “Hello I like your post “Amoxicillin Antibiotic Information!” so well that I like to ask you whether I should translate into German and linking back. Greetings Engel”

I felt so bad when i noticed it was a spam comment while i was reading your post. I shared the author so you can flag it

I guess I judge the comments on my blog by whether it benefits the readers coming to that post. Even if Timur wasn’t a spammer and really did want to republish your post, I think that’s the sort of thing better dealt with your private email.

Wow, i came to this blog from google when i was searching for ‘how to find out whether a blog is do-follow or not’ - yup after getting into your blog i figured it out - i am having SEO for firefox plugin - but actually that no-follow links indicating feature was turned-off by me - now i turned it ON - yup - and about those spam comments - well, i used to get many comments even though my blog is not that popular - so i thought of installing akismat - and from then on no spam comments on my blog.

I think what happens is that companies hire people to place comments all over the place. Some people are less creative and they use the same comments. I think there is a lot of software out there that auto comments, creating alot of the same.

Coincidently, my blog is do follow as well.

http://www.canadian-money-advisor.ca/archives/ and I do welcome comments that are not spammy!

    Cheers

Looks like the spamming methods are getting more complex. Sometimes I just wish the good old days of easy to spot, poor grammar spam comments would return!

  7. Cupid Blogger on January 9th, 2009 6:40 am

I would agree with you. I got that message to in my recently launched love blog - Cupid Blogger Dot Com, my thought was like you before. But this spammers spam every blog post i have in my blog. Now i used WP-Ban to ban him to access my blog completely :)

Hi, I will keep an eye out for this comment now that I am a “Do follow” blog like yourself, Cheers

  9. Mr utorrent on January 12th, 2009 7:26 pm

Yes you have to be careful. I think the most successful spam is the spam that says positive things about the blog or the author in some way.

It does look like Askimet works though - I am not quite sure how it works, but I know it is blocking comments on my blog

There are a number of blog auto-commenter scripts used by less-than-white SEOs and spammers. Some can be configured to look for blogs using ‘keywordluv’. Generally, a comment that does not directly relate to the post has been submitted using automated software.

  12. Chelle from Lose Weight for Free on January 15th, 2009 6:44 pm

I get a lot of spam and some spammers are getting harder and harder to tell if they are actually reading a post or not. I do have several blogs though also, so it does make it easy to spot someone who keeps duplicating the same comment everywhere! It is sad, because the comments seem legitimate, but when you see it show up on more than 1 blog you know that its not!

  13. Jack from Sausage Recipes on January 17th, 2009 2:16 am

I can tell you from experience, from owning my own personal blog, most of the time, those comments like that usually are spam. Especially those “Nice Article!” Comments, those always irritate me.

  14. Jack Clarke from Technology Blog on January 18th, 2009 8:26 pm

I use Akismet and so far it’s caught just about everything. Although 4 or 5 legit posts were flagged which I had to manually approve, I can say it does a great job.

  15. John from Furniture Stores on January 19th, 2009 6:04 am

I think the comment is too general so it already kinda look spammy to me. Nancy’s story is a bit different since the title of the post is stated but still too general.

This shows though that spam-bots are becoming more and more “intelligent” so bloggers would have to be more vigilant in the fight against spam.

  16. apcalis on January 20th, 2009 7:20 am

ma points are some people are used to say these words like ” awesome , very nice content.” or “i love your blog”.

i got to notice that all these kind of comments are quit spamm.. they jus believe to got their link or watever…

  17. Justin from Airsoft Rifles on January 20th, 2009 9:39 pm

You gotta watch out for those spammers, just trying to get links without any regard for the blog owner. I will admit that the primary reason I blog comment is for links. That’s right, I said it, but it’s okay. I make sure that my comments are not spam like and I respond in an intelligent fashion. This is an intelligent post, right? It’s not spam. I will challenge anybody who dares call this spam, right now, on a wooden table in Mexico City.

  18. Jake from real estate career training on January 21st, 2009 4:08 am

Unfortunately spammers are getting a little bit better at what they do, spam. It used to be that you only would receive blog spam from people that could barely speak a word of english and it would stick out like a soar thumb, but apparently spamming is a good business and everyone has now jumped on the bandwagon.

The funny thing is that you could get a free link if you just left a real comment, but rather they risk no link at all to spam, maybe spamming is an addiction? Someone start up a spammers anonymous website where they can go to get support when their links don’t stick! :)

  19. Ana-Retirement Planning on January 21st, 2009 5:13 am

There should be a module on how to comment right:-) I always tell people to please do take time to read ones post and leave a relevant comment that will contribute something to the discussion. If you wanted to gain a back link then pay it with a good comment. This is just a matter of give and take.

  20. Charles from Las Vegas Real Estate on January 21st, 2009 9:42 pm

I used to get those all the time. “I love reading your blog, I’m going to add you to my reader” or the real obvious ones “Keep up the good work, blah blah”. I’m sure these scripts will be more sophisticated over time and spammers will be harder to catch. I know some people just hire others to comment for them. The “human bots” are the hardest to catch.

  21. ann on January 22nd, 2009 7:21 pm

anyway it is fine to get good comments, when it is a scam thn its too bad.,scamming is not easy to find out,but it will be too bad to receive these all..

  22. George Norton on January 24th, 2009 9:31 am

I just stopped by your blog and thought I would say hello. I like your site design. Looking forward to reading more down the road.

  23. Valerie from Laptop Handybundle on January 25th, 2009 7:25 am

Sometimes, some comments that look genuine may be spam. But other spammers may still be caught by using the same comments for other blogs as well. You’ll know if a comment is spam if the comment is not related to your blog post. Some spammers will just say, “I like your blog!” “I like your post”, etc. but they don’t even bother to read even a single post in your blog. Anyway, Askimet is reliable when it comes to catching spammers. Many bloggers are already using it.

Spammers are getting smarter day by day.. on the other hand anti spam methods are not very much effective..
Thanks for the information, it may prove useful to every one..

  25. WebBanshee on February 3rd, 2009 7:49 pm

Comment spams are hard to fight down.Because spamers say simply it depends on a try : ) What can happen? In worst case the comment will not be published, but then there are tons of other places to try.The email spam is a little bit easier to manage, because of mail hurdling (grey listing). The detection depends on filters and of course the technic that a serious mail from a serious host will be resent when delayed.A spam host nearly never tries to resend the mail. The blog spams are different. All automatic detection can be overriden with a good written, authentic spam content making the admin believe it is a serious ment comment…

    they are caught rarely..
Thank you for sharing your experience with spammers..

  28. Theo from website laten maken on February 6th, 2009 11:36 am

Disregarding the spam / not spam discussion, is it good to receive a comment like that? In terms of both copyright and duplicate content, I would’nt be too pleased to see my exact blog contents appearing on other websites than my own..

  29. Chris from Joyce Meyer Books on February 10th, 2009 2:07 pm

Whether we like it or not, spammers are here to stay, so we must be always on the lookout to clean them out.

very useful information for me. i just stop my blogging because there are many spammers on my blog. Now I’m using commentluv plugin with my blog.

  32. Kadit on March 3rd, 2009 11:16 am

captcha is very useful for anti spam i use it in my blog too.

  33. Holiday on April 22nd, 2009 7:52 pm

Captcha is not always a great way to solve the problem. Some spammers work manually. But what about that spammer-tracking system. How does it track spammers (ip, nick, same e-mail, same text)?

Well, what kind of name is Timur anyways? Plus, the comment, i think, was too short and sweet to be a real sincere person.

  36. Rovanesh on May 8th, 2009 7:11 am

Splogs are blogs that are setup specifically for improving ones search engine placement. They often take the content from another blog and put it on theirs and try to get a link from the other blog by using the ping back system.

    Hi,
Spamm comment are the big problem now days.
They are comes to the dofollow blog like ant comes on the food.
Use the spam filter for that.

  39. Ben from Doctor Jobs Australia on June 5th, 2009 1:14 pm

I have seen a similar comment appearing in many blogs that I visit and surprisingly it was being approved by the blog owner, what the person said was that his English is not good but he enjoys reading the blog or something similar to that. So I think most of the blog owners got fooled and approved it.
