My blogs have been dofollow for a few months now, and for the most part it is going very well. However, I do get a few comments that I will NOT approve because they are obvious comment spam.
I want to give you some real life examples of what I consider comment spam that I will not approve, and provide you with some dofollow blog comment rules.
Before I do, I want to stress how important it is to post quality comments, related to the post you are commenting on.
Remember, DoFollow blog owners are giving you some link love, in exchange for your quality comments.
If you, and others, post junk comments, blog owners will get tired of seeing the junk, get tired of moderating junk comments, get tired of being taken advantage of, and will turn nofollow back on.
So, please be considerate, and appreciative of dofollow blog owners by doing the right thing and leaving quality comments related to the post you are commenting on.
DoFollow Blog Comment Rules
1. Read the post you are going to be commenting on! I also read several of the current comments if there are some. It only takes a few minutes to read the comments and get a general feel on what people are thinking.
Then, post comments directly related to the blog post, related to the general tone of the comments, or related to a comment left by a specific person.
2. Be kind, even if you disagree with the blog owner’s post, or some individual comments. As a blog owner if you blast me or some of my posters directly, I won’t allow your comments. If you disagree with me, that’s fine. Disagree, offer more information to support your disagreement, and do it respectfully.
3. I prefer at least a short paragraph of comments, that adds to the comment conversation. A simple “I agree” is not going to be approved by me.
4. Don’t use your comments to list every website you own. After leaving some good comments, don’t blatantly advertise your other websites. I’m already giving you an incoming link with your selected anchor text. If you add additional websites, I probably won’t approve your comments.
If you add a website in the comments that is directly related to the discussion, even if it’s yours, I will allow it. If I think you are just trying to get more links, I won’t allow it.

Well when you open a website you can right click and check if it is a dofollow or no follow by clicking on properties. Do follow allows you to make comments where any link in the website can be track. No follow stop there itself.

The above comment is a nice paragraph of related text, but it’s apparent they didn’t read my post at all. My post was all about how to tell if a blog is dofollow or not.
That comment added absolutely no value to the discussion, and was just stating information I had already stated in the post.
It looked to me like the user just read the headline “How Do I Know if A Blog is Do-Follow?” and thought – oh I know the answer to that. So, they posted the answer without having any idea what the post was about.

That one is pretty obvious. That sort of comment just makes me mad, and gives us responsible dofollow blog commentors a bad name.
It only takes a few minutes to read before you comment, and only takes a few minutes to post a relevant comment that adds value.
The blog owner will approve your quality comments, and appreciate you adding value.
Others who read the comments are also more likely to click on your link if you are contributing good content to the discussion.

You are right. Spam does not have to be automated to be spam. A person can leave just as many worthless comments as software. The line between spam and worthwhile comments is very fine.
I often get 5 comments in a row from the same visitor to my blog. I think this is because I set my dofollow to kick in after 3 posts. Sometimes all 5 comments add value so I let them through. But I still know the intention was to get some links.
It’s just hard to tell sometimes and most of the time, I just delete instead of telling Askimet it’s spam, because then the person is marked at Askimet. And I like to give the benefit of the doubt.
i think it is good to let your viewer to have another link from your site after they leave a comments. But i agree also with you that you may have a lot of work to filter out the spam comments.
Fair points, it’s not much to ask. I like the idea of dofollow but always wonder what happens when someone leaves insightful comments with a link to a bad neighbourhood site that could damage your Google ranking.

In fact, is very hard to do an ethical backlink work. But that is no reason to spam every blog just to get “link love”.
As the author says, its just take a moment to TRULY read the post and then write something helpful.
LOL I can so understand your comment policy. I have dofollow on my blog as well and started getting listed on different do-follow lists.
At first I did not really saw when my blog was abused by spammers, my ego got a little boost when somebody commented that the post was great and that they had dugg it but then I started seeing a pattern and really felt stupid ROFL.
At one point I have thought about switching back to nofollow, especially when another link was made to my blog from a do-follow list, and the poster was commenting just how easy it was to get PR links with just leaving some comments.
In the end though, the spam is pretty easily controlled by some good plugins, plus the delete button is my good friend. I do believe in the do-follow movement and do want to give some linkjuice to people who actually have something interesting to comment. Lazy commentators who just abuse my blog are fastly deleted without feeling bad about it

we should remember the owner of blog came to good PR is by struggling. So mostly they know whats the intentions are of a commentator.
If they made it do-follow then its not by mistake.
I think we should prefer commenting only to those blogs that we really want to read, even the intentions are backlinks.

My systems engineer removed the no follow tag about a week ago and added something called comment luv. So far, I also get a lot of comments that are not satisfactory. I have one blog that is completely overrun with spam. It got so bad that I just turned comments off. It’s really sad that some people can’t respect blog owners.

I think he totally misses the point. Dofollow blogs get lots of link love coming in to them from all the lists of dofollow blogs. I would be glad to find my dofollow blog on all the lists, not sad.
I also appreciate your initial point #2 above. I discovered that one of the big nofollow blogs will not approve your comments if you in any way disagree with his original post, no matter if you are respectful, and no matter how valid your disagreement might be.

I agree with all the points you made, I just wish other blog owners would take such a sensible view.
I have had several arguments with other bloggers who delete perfectly good comments just because of an anchored keyword. I think that most bloggers just do not understand how Google works.
The biggest argument I get is that an anchored link will dilute the PR of the page giving the link, which is total rubbish. The anchors “Free Mortgage Advice” or “Fred Smith” carry the same amount of link juice. It is only the site receiving keyword anchored links that will see the difference between the two links.
Another point these bloggers don’t realise is that every new comment will ping the search engines and bring the spiders back. Lastly, the benefit of having new content added to the bloggers blog via comments will probably out way the link juice lost.
Anyway, sorry to rant on.

LOL. right! lots of comments are not making sense nowadays. its only fair to remove comments that seems to shift from one topic to the other. what a load of clobbers. hehe.
I would be mad if a comment is not related at all to the real subject or comments. People abuse of the kindness of some bloggers who change to dofollow by just spamming their pages and forcing them to just go back to nofollow. That should be penalized with more strict rules for the protection of bloggers.
It’s great that you set specific rules because sometimes it hard to know what is allowed and what is not for a blog comment.
After getting unapproved by by many blogger i came across dofollow rules it,s really good information you provided you are spreading link love. All commentor should respect the blog owner.
I also support the “Do follow-movement”.It´s only fair that people who take the time to post a relevant and helpful comment will be rewarded with a link back to their site.
This do-follow movement thing will really help writers get good quality comments.
It doesn’t take to much to read the article and comments in order to contribute with a comment to the conversation. It is better than “please keep it up”, that’s not contributing at all.

Thanks for joining the dofollow community. When I switched to a dofollow I started recieving a lot more comments. One thing I noticed to get rid of spam comments, is to not let any short pointless comments be posted. I think when people see a one sentence comment that got posted they think that their one sentence comment will get posted too.

I think it is important to have a well laid out list of what you expect from your comments. If you don’t people will try and take advantage of you and claim ignorance when called out.
I’ve found people will try and take advantage of your blog comments unless you have well laid out set of guidelines for them to follow.

my hat off to you. I personally have no problem with people leaving posts on my blogs (22 of them at last count, all of which are dofollow). The only thing I ask is that they register, as they will not be able to comment unless they do so, and that they leave a comment thats on topic and not just a thanks, great post etc.
I will immediately reject such comments as spam.

i think that dofollow is win-win situation, of course is necessary use some anti spam plugin like asimet, to me has been working fine too.

I agree, it is very difficult to keep dofollow blogs as spammers always leave their spammy comments there. I tried to delete these comments automaticaly using some plugins but this was worthless. that is why I always delete spammy comments manually.
It is true that blogs that are dofollow are the ones targeted for spammers, but the reputation of being one of them is hard to remove.

It would be a good idea to penalize those I.Ps were the spam comes from so they really stop sending that crap.

Do follow links is nice to promote website
I think dofollow links is like a reward for webmasters who give post related and valuable comments. This is a 2 way profit: the blog owner get more traffic and interested readers, and the visitor get useful posts and 1 way backlinks.
as long as your blog is interesting, i believe that people will comment accordingly whether or not it is dofollow or notfollow.
Seriously it does not matter if the site i comment on follows me back to my page.

I think that search engines should revise the way in which they look at links to websites. Nothing should be taken away from the linking site in my view. Nice article by the way
This is a very good tip. This is also one way to know who are the spammers and who are not by the way they respond to the topic and the comment.
All rules you’ve mentioned for commenting in a blog are reasonable. I just hope that all who had the chance to comment in your blog should be at least reasonable enough to provide clean and related comment to the topic. More power to you and to your blogs.

My blog is fairly new and I’m yet to receive a decent genuine comment. I’ve also gone dofollow, and though the spam hasn’t grown, it’s still all I’m getting. Very frustrating but still agree with your post. I think we all quickly become experts at spotting comments that obviously never read the initial post.
I agree that their should be rules on placing comments on do follow blogs. It’s just fair enough. Besides, if we follow these guidelines on other blogs, then we’ll receive the same treatment as well.

I do agree with your opinion, I had my first batch of blogs on dofollow but later on turned them to nofollow because of spam post; the typical “I agree” posts…
Anyway, through moderating blog comments I noticed that some people copy a part of my article and post it as their comment! (like I wouldn’t notice) — This is another reason why I turned all my blogs to nofollow.

Am a dofollow blog and feels ridiculous to most “nofollow” blog that but wants to get higher PR with free one-way backlink from doFollow blogs.

Well i appreciate that you are atleast giving some good reasons to prevent spamming i personaly use keywords but always try to take part in the discussion not just only posting for my benefit
Are blogs any different than forum posts? Most forum posts have at least two of three
“THANKS FOR THE INFO” between actually useful posts.
I have slightly use a different way to comment on websites and that is i first read the post that is mandatory and then read the first two comments and the last two comments given, from this you can get the idea about post and others reaction about the post. In this way you can comment easily.

Spamming is the bete noire of the DoFollow. Once that gets resolved, DoFollow will be the norm.
It is the linklove that drives the spamming on the net. As long as search engines place emphasis on links to rank sites, spamming will exist.
I consider spamming to be an occupational hazard of working on the net.

We need to adapt to spamming, if we wish to continue working on the net. We cannot possibly eliminate spam altogether.
Making our blog to become dofollow is good for both parties, the blog owner as well as the visitor. However the visitor need to understand that they cannot leave their spamming comment, it has to be follow with the quality comment. That will create the link love between one each others.

All of my blogs are doFollow, I also use plugins such as CommentLuv and KeywordLuv ’cause I think it should boost comments amount on my blogs. I absolutely see no reason to take care about spammers, it isn’t hard to remove or not approve their comments. And I think that some commentators who left their comments here, like “Penis Enlargement” plays unfair. Because they want just to “earn” links for their websites, but do not allow to leave comments on their personal blogs.
Pore through the vast list of do follow comments on the blog. Here is a great list of some of these rules for commenting.

I take a pretty simple view of judging whether the intended comment flows like a separate and thought-provoking addition to a growing body of debate and knowledge. Simple agreement or disagreemnt is inadequate, as is veering off at a tangent. If I was in verbal conversation, would I be happy to continue talking to this person?

You said right if our comment would be legitimate and valuable then it would not be consider as a spam. The quality does matter in link building.
Wouldn’t you think that – and this is addressed to the “no-blog-spammers” – that the easiet solution would be just to deactivate comment links. Otherwise, yeah, you’re just leaving yourself open to becoming a spam magnet. Or a 24/7 comment moderator …
The I agree with the rules you made.There are a lot of comment spammers out there that just use software that mass submit comments to dofollow blogs.Comment spamming lowers the experience for people that visits the website and it is very irritating to read their crap that is not related to the post in any way.

Its not just down to spam why websites prevent comments from being posted. Part of the reason is to make it difficult for other websites, after all they do not want a competitor gaining an upper hand! They absolutely have the right to do that if they so wish.
Comment spam is a huge pain in the neck. The difference between a real comment and comment spam is usually very, very obvious.
More people should talk about the do follow question, because many people choose to make their blogs no follow to get rid of spammers. But it’s also hurting genuine commenter. If people where more informed maybe they would start posting with more sense. Thanks for this post.
Most problem in people who writes comments, becasue they only want one more link. And they don’t care about blog, post text, etc. They have no time to read blog and write related comment. I think need to approve every comment and don’t let post useless messages.

As a newbie to Internet Marketing, I want to vouch for new kids on the block who have good ethics, and thank you for writing about those who don’t. In my research into this whole venture I have found many a way to cheat the system, including spamming blogs with automated software. However, I want to sleep at night knowing I am making an honest living. I only comment on blogs that I read and feel like I can contribute to. It may take me longer to build my site but that’s ok. Doing otherwise would not be staying true to myself. I have a dofollow blog and intend to keep it just as you do, deleting obvious spam posts.

Blog commenting is a very natural way of building quality back links for sites, and rules to be followed are explained very clearly in this post.
This is all good stuff for someone who is just a beginner in the blog world. We will be building our blog to be able to be a DoFollow blog, and will also use your ideas and rules. I had a blog once before and it was quickly covered up in spam.
I always read the posts and make appropriate comments on others’ blogs. It irritates me to no end to see all the comments that are completely unrelated, obvious that no one has read the blog. I am considering opening my blog to dofollow just to help people out but I don’t want to have to mess with all the junk that gets added.

Each dot one site link is placed like that more dots is used so i immediately deleted that comments.
This makes us to feel bad about it, even though it is dofollow or nofollow don’t spoil the blog.

This is an area that you need to be careful in. Situations like this generally cause people to use comment bots. Those bots (aka: programs) are automatic in what they do and say, listing only phrases that are obviously fake, to anyone that looks at them. Some are better than others, but as someone that maintains a company blog, I mark anything not specifically written for the content on the page as spam. Do yourself a favor and write your own comments. It’ll save you time, you’ll learn things and your comments are more likely to be posted.

I had the same problem. I had a site on which I approved comments, but the mass of people began to exploit it. I think we should be cautious with that!

I am not sure if asking a question is appropriate, but here goes: it is nurse week here and we are looking for legitimate do follow health practitioner blogs, and many of the ones we find require registration. Do you have any thoughts on the potential increased value of such sites, or is it not worth it?
Spam is the bane of my existence, and as so many other commenters have previously said, it doesn’t need to be automated to be spam. Posting comment on blogs is a well recognised and easy way to build links, especially if you’re not offering any value by saying what you do.
On topic comments add value, and serves to build community and friendships, whilst spam just ruins a nice space to interface for everybody.
I a big fan of do-follow myself – but it requires nearly constant moderation, and I tend to let in junk comments that I know I should delete.
In fact, the comment problem is forcing me to change from a Drupal CMS to a WordPress, which I believe will make things a little easier… I had hoped to have more of a community type site (thus the choice of Drupal), but rare has been the visitor who’s put up good quality posts in their allowed blogs, so I’ll switch to WordPress, and continue to moderate…
Perhaps a rule such as “No comment less than 5 sentences” or some such? The better comments are usually the longer ones anyway.

In my opinion it is very important to know the comment rules before making any comment which give more importance to your comment and will not consider as spam. This will also make blogs more interesting.
Well, it is very difficult to find blogs to follow, but you have to give such information as how nice to find blogs to follow
Posting comments should be done in an honest way. Do read the post you are going to be commenting on, so you can write something that adds to the conversation. This way you are adding value to other people.
Before I do, I want to stress how important it is to post quality comments, related to the post you are commenting on.
An interesting take on dofollow (although I hate that term as it all links SHOULD be *follow in my opinion, but thats a different arguement for a different day!) but my main concern is the time it takes to consider each comment in full and decide if I should allow it or not.
My corporate blog gets 1000′s of comments each day, which I simply can’t review myself and don’t want to incure the staffing cost to have someone else do it.
Personally I think that the whole nofollow issue is wrong and should never have been introduced – I don’t think anyone should be changing how they work (site owners) to help Google. At the end of the day they are a major reason why link spam evolved, and they expect webmasters to change their practices to help them reduce it
There are so many spam comments that doesn’t look like spammy. You have to be very careful on checking on spam comments and make sure you double checked on them.

Getting links from dofollow blogs is very good, but most bloggers have been turned off by spammers which is evident in some comments here too; though all good and bad comments are borne out of link building.

I totally agree that if you are kind enough to allow DoFollows, then you have a right to demand a certain amount of respect – and that respect is to at least have the decency to ready your blog in the first place.
I personally believe blogs are more than just link building – they are great for market research and to build your own knowledge.

Looks like the task of deleting spam comments is just too time consuming when you have more than 500 comments on one post. I feel for you.

They are keywords through which you can define the article. Write about a movie, and put the tag: movies. Think of tags as smaller categories. Do not put in your articles link tags. If however you use them, make sure they are not numerous and the visitors cannot be misled.

I would be mad if a comment is not related at all to the real subject or comments. People abuse of the kindness Birthday SMS of some bloggers who change to dofollow by just spamming their pages and forcing them to just go back to nofollow. That should be penalized with more strict rules for the protection of bloggers.

I think that you have to give to get. You can’t jam a blog post comment with unintelligent and unrelated comments. Blogging is about contribution. If you are able to post some meaningful comments despite it being an obvious attempt at generating a link, you’ll often times have your comment approved. We have a network of 300 blogs and we are more than willing to reward those that do a well thought out comment.
