Do you want to sell more from your blog? If you're struggling and not making any money from your blog I suggest you check out Vegas Traffic Jam!

As this blog becomes more popular I am seeing more comments that, though not obviously spam, add no value to the post or comments of others. Therefore, these comments are seen by me to be spam comments.

I hate to see people go through the work of adding a comment only to have it deleted by me, but I will not allow comments that do not add to the value of the post.

Comments like “This is great info, I now understand this better. I like your blog and layout and will be returning often”.

Although this is a nice, complimentary comment, it does not pass my “smell test”. Compliments don’t necessarily add to the post discussion and this type of comment makes me think it’s a standard comment probably being used across several dofollow blogs.

If you are not going to read my blog post, and comment on the content, I will remove your comment. I don’t mind taking the time to do that, but hate to see people waste their time.

So, to get the most out of commenting on blogs and avoiding being seen as contributing blog spam, I suggest you read my dofollow blog comment rules.

Dofollow blog comment spam has caused popular dofollow blogs to turn nofollow on again. Please do the right thing and contribute quality comments on dofollow blogs.

Mike

It happens all the time mate!We must be more responsible as a blogger. This is a very good program in my opinion, but if we don’t be responsible it won’t last long.

indeed. i’ve seen this on some other former do follow blogs. they just get inundated by comments, which did not appear to have been posted in good faith, so they decide that their do follow experiment is no longer worth pursuing.

    it’s indeed a shame.

still, it’s tricky trying to find the line where a comment becomes a spam comment. for example, strangely enough, i usually am more active on no follow blogs nowadays because i know that if i like what i read i can basically say so, and that’s alright.

you also make a good point in your policy. i’ve had comments flagged as spam recently, and because those flags were directed through akismet, i suffered much grief while waiting for akismet to sort me out.

so sometimes i try to pick and choose where i comment nowadays, and on which post, both because i want to be able to contribute to the discussion, and also because i don’t want to end up in comment limbo again. :)

The thing is, you don’t really get less spam by having comment links set to nofollow! I’ve dealt with spam comments from automated bots since the day my websites got indexed in the search engines.

Now, it can be very annoying when comments seem thin or excessively complimentary while ignoring the content of the post, but I won’t “spam” people for it. The conditional nofollow plugin is nice, or better yet I’ll approve the comment minus the link!

Hey, I get hecklers that are serious - why not compliments that are serious? Its pretty harsh that someone could end up in Akisment limbo just because they were trying to say something nice.

    I agree John,

I don’t flag someone as spam unless it is obviously spam, but my Spam Karma plugin usually traps those comments and removes them for me automatically.

Comments that are questionable, or not up to your standards should not be flagged as spam with Askimet - that’s just wrong.

    Just delete those comments.

Sorry someone flagged your comments as spam with Askimet, Kouji.

I think you should use “linkylove”. It should help you get rid of spammy comments and improve the quality of comments. Only regular readers will benefit from dofollow links and you’ll receive quality comments, because most of the spammers will have your blog tagged as “nofollow” and will hence give up on posting spammy comments.

BTW: “This is great info, I now understand this better. I like your blog and layout and will be returning often”.

Just did some copy/paste to save time :)

    Cheers!

Well Mike, this is a “side effect” for turnning on the dofollow. Aside the hunted spam, I’ve seen a lot of comments over mine too just to get a back link and the silly thing is that they are irrelevant!

Dofollow dosn’t mean to accept any comments, right? It means you respect who read your blog and I wonder why people just drop and hurry?

There are 2 problems with dofollow. One is obviously the spammers, especially internet marketers. They really are abusing one of my sites so I may have to add back my nofollow link. But the second problem comes from us, the ones who offer the dofollow. We are the ones who added the dofollow link and this is a free link. How many people can pass up on something that is free? Not too many if we are being truly honest. But all I expect from my free gift is just some respect back from those who benefit from the gift. I totally agree with your post and hope many more will read it and understand. Comment, but show the decency of writing something worthwhile and beneficial for the post. But I’m sure we will never win the war totally against the spammers.

i think it’s 90 °/° of blog comments so if you delete them you will end up with only 4 or 5 comments that discuss the topic of the post

It’s frustrating sometimes to have to manually moderate all those spammy comments. However what is good with Dofollows is that it promotes discussions. As for me, when trying to google for a fresh portion of Dofollows, I sometimes find interesting posts that I really would want to comment on ;)

I like that you spell out your blog comment rules.

It really doesn’t take much time to read the post you’re commenting on, and provide some relevant comments.

Putting a little effort into providing good comments is the least you can do to get back a nice link.

  12. Marble Host on December 12th, 2008 12:16 pm

    i totally agree with u dude.Good post.

  13. marblehost on December 27th, 2008 4:46 am

I came back again to this read this part again.
I must say i too have seen most of the spammer too make comments saying this is nice blogs , thanks likewise.

Those are general things. Without coming to the blog even we can say like that.

Then i hope you are in right way.
