New DoFollow Blog Comment Strategy

If you are thinking about commenting on this dofollow blog, I welcome and value your comments.
You do need to know that I monitor the comments closely, and I do delete comments that are not related to the post topic.
The reason I have to monitor comments closely, is there will always be people who try to cheat the system.
By reading comments posted to this blog, I recently discovered a new dofollow blog comment strategy. If you have a dofollow blog, you need to know about this new strategy. If you comment on dofollow blogs, I will have some advice for you.
I noticed an interesting comment on this blog. The comment stated “Is generating dofollow blog backlink traffic really worth the time and effort that it takes to make quality comments on dofollow blogs? Does it really work? I am a strong advocate of dofollow blogs, which is why I blog about it, and I can tell you that my experience tells me that it does work.”
I thought, that sure sounds familiar. Of course it was familiar, it was the first paragraph of a post I made on this very blog a few days ago – see Dofollow Blog Backlink Traffic.
This comment was not left on the above post, it was left as a comment on a different blog post.
So, it appears someone is extracting the first paragraph of a post, then posting that as a comment on a different post of the same blog, to get a backlink that looks like a valid comment.
I am guessing this is an automated, or semi-automated process that was designed to post a lot of comments in a short period of time. This is a very clever strategy, and would have gone unnoticed if I didn’t actually read my blog comments.
But, I did catch it and this person will not get a backlink from me because I consider this – blog comment spam. This time I just deleted the comment, if I see it again from the same person, I will flag it as spam. If I start seeing it used more often by different people, I will flag them all as spam.
If your blog is a dofollow blog, you really need to watch your comments closely and not let people take advantage of you giving them a backlink. Don’t reward people who are trying to cheat the system.
If you comment on dofollow blogs and are tempted to try something similar, don’t do it. Sooner or later you will be discovered, and your blog comments will be flagged as spam. Then your blog comments will disappear, and you will only have yourself to blame.

I’m dofollow, and use the keywordluv plugin, but like you, I’m still relatively quick to delete and/or spam any comments that just don’t quite smell right.
Some people think so short term. If you find a good blog that actually care enough to give you a followed link on your comments, why would you want to risk having your search be a waste of time by leaving a spammy comment?

It’s a good thing you read your blog comments and are able to spot these sorts of things. I hope dofollow bloggers take your advice and monitor their blog comments.
Our blog with health articles is no-follow, but they still spam. They post some copied content, like “Interesting blog. Are you blogging for long time…”

Thanks for the advice on commenting dofollow blogs, I leave comments on dofollow blogs but it is always a real comment not a spam I usually moderate my comments too even though I manage a nofollow blog but still people leave spam comments like leaving an advertisment on the comment and leaving a link to their site I usually reject it.
Everybody has been complaining for years about google, and backlinks to get good serps.
But lets face it, It is here, and dosn’t look like it will change anytime soon. That being said.. it offers webmasters and bloggers a unique oppurtunity to not only co-exist, but to cooperate. sites need back links,an commenting on blogs are a good way to get them. But any webmaster looking for backlinks that dosn’t take the time to offer the blog owner a good well thought out comment. deserves to not only be deprived of a backlink. but should be punished. because in the end, he is contributing to the down fall of a system that is beneficial to both parties. I have seen many great blogs that i commented on frequently, change to “no follow” because they got tired of dealing with the spammy comments. I’m a very busy webmaster with multiple sites. And I’ll be the first to admit, If i didn’t need back links, i wouldn’t visit blogs at all. I just don’t have the time for recreational reading. But since i do need to, I know I should atleast offer something in return. And if i have to spend 5 minutes, writing something that will in someway contribute to the blog, in exchange for a backlink, that will help my site grow, well than that is time well spent ! to webmasters who use blogs for backlinks.. just remember the blogger works just as hard as you on his site, and deserves the same respect you expect.

This is a very good strategy but i was already doing so many comments on do follow blogs but still i can’t fell the strong traffic from do follow blogs or just maybe my blogs is not that good..:(
Well using bots and stuff like that for generating backlinks is kinda pointless. I mean there’s not enough worthy dofollow blogs to let yourself get banned from most of them by posting worhtless comments that’ll stay on the site for <24 hours.
If you ever look at the freelance sites there are tons of job opportunities for commentors. Hiring out for this will only get your site marked as a spam site. It really does not take me long to go out every few days and generate some links reading and commenting on interesting blogs for a link back to my site.

Lately I’ve seen a new type of spam comments appearing on my blog. It starts with a bolded search phrase on a single line followed by the comment. Sometimes it seems relevant to the topic sometimes not. So do keep a lookout for bolded text comments. People are getting smarter in spam comments. Like you said, if you’re not alert, you may end up approving some of them.

How hard is it read a post real quick and then write a comment on it real quick. If you want the link it seems to me that this minimal effort is worth it.

nice post, you really need to stay alert these days, there are so many people that want to find shortcuts, and even though you have a dofollow blog you shouldn’t have to put up with garbage comments.

Spam comes to all blogs. We have been a “No-follow” blog for the last year we are now under redesign and are changing to “Do-follow” to encourage more visitors to comment. For 10 real comments we get 100′s of spam comments. We will continue to moderate and use CommentLuv,Kwywordluv and Top Commenter and hope to benefit from these changes.
I have not seen the stealing of partial article post to use as comment spam yet. Wow! I guess some people are really getting sneaky.
I would have never thought of watching for my own words as spam. That would really make me mad!
Spam is spreading int the cyberspace. I have a question for awhile. How could you determine and evaluate comments if that is a spam or not?
This information is certainly very useful. Even for my new blog, most of the comments I received are complete spams and not relevant to the topic. Even blog owners should watch out, that the comments received is not from any banned websites.

It’s actually not so hard to moderate your site from spam comments(unless you have a really big site).
The method this spammer was using on your site was definitely sneaky, but a cool one. Another type of comments I have seen on my blogs are copy of comments I approved a couple of days ago on the same / different post.
The guy is clever and knows that I think a blog comment is good and have approved it earlier, so there is a good chance I will approve it again after a couple of days

I am a big fan of do-follow blogs, but I have also been reading a lot of sites mentioning that no-follow is starting to be ignored. Whether or not that is true, it doesn’t hurt to make comments on no-follow blogs too.

Hi, this is my first visit to your site. I too have noticed that some readers copy and use other peoples comments in the same blog post and get away with it. Yes its up to the blog owner to spot it and I hope that when they do, they also follow your steps and delete all their comments.
Answer to Robert, I too have been commenting on do-follow websites for nearly a month now. I have built up over 1500 backlink in yahoo but only 4 backlinks in Google. I’m not sure why but I know it won’t be an overnight thing, it does take abit of time.

There may be a few reasons you are not seeing a return on your time investment.
1. Make sure you are using keywords you want to target in the comment title. First look at some comments on the blog to make sure the blog owner allows keywords. Some only approve names.
2. If you are targeting keywords that are too competitive, you are fighting a loosing battle.
3. Make sure you leave quality comments so your comments are approved.
4. Don’t just comment on the same blogs. Spread your comments out to multiple blogs.

From what I understand, Yahoo is a better gauge of actual backlinks, because Google does not want to give too much backlink info away.

Well there’ll always be people trying to workaround the system. Using copy/paste from the author’s own site seems like a huge timesaver – if the guy can send out 100 messages like that in the time it’d take him to post 5 normal comments I think he’ll get the same or even better results.

Have you gotten hundreds of spams from porn and gambling sites yet? I’m sure it is a headache to monitor all of them. Deleting is painful too because you have real comments slapped in between the spams. Let me know how DoFollow policy is working out for you.
I have noticed that certain social bookmarking sites I had submitted to also try this method. I don’t understand how a reciprocal link can be much better if it is off the sites primary topic, but whatever.

This strategy is basically a brain dump of thoughts I’m having about how to use “do follow” and comments to best serve your blog over time. I’m thinking that different strategies will suit blogs depending where along the blog lifecycle
This was very interesting read and very useful strategy to everyone. I agree, as a new blogger the reason that I am posting comments is to ask questions and learn more about certain things, I have seen how people do come in and leave one or two word comments like the thanks but don’t really comment on what the post is all about.

I have read tons of writings about do-follow blog commenting and wonder when Google starts to treat their links like spam. They are not spam but not either natural links.
The higher the pagerank, the more spam and irrelevant comments you get on a dofollow blog.
Beside comments moderation, another way to handel this is to use a ‘do-follow’ plugin removes the ‘nofollow’ tag from comment after the commenter leave ‘x’ number of comments.
I do so over my blog to be sure that only respecable commentators have backlink from me!

I have no problem with SEO blog commenting, as long as the name is not abused with keyword stuffing.
I’m still trying to figure out if DoFollow blog commenting works or not. Rather than concentrating on a whole niche website I am targeting a specific article and seeing how commenting on DoFollow blogs will affect its SERP ranking. I should know in a week or two if the backlinks are having any positive effect.

I am a dofollow newbie / convert. I started my own blog a month ago to promote my new business, so far so good. Then I was told by a SEO friend of mine about follow / nofollow. I had been busy posting comments all over the web, for no effect it seems. I’ve now made my own blog dofollow and I want to know if it matters where I post my blog comments. I think that taking the time to read a post and commenting pertinently is scarce, beautiful, yet priceless.
The DOFOLLOW thang is a great strategy in itself because it advocates all that blogging is about: social networking. I recently started a few blogs and I made them all DOFOLLOW anyway. You see it is not important for me if they ever become popular but I find the fact that anyone can get a backlink from me a pretty awesome gesture. Popular blogging that will one day generate income requires the help of many friendly hands and nofollow is plain selfish to me.
I know there are a lot of strategies out there for using links back to blogs, but this automated one is a new one to me. This is a good find. How did you catch this exactly? I will keep my eyes open for that.

I think its pretty funny that someone would rather spend the energy to scrape your own text and feed it back as a comment – I guess automation will always bring out the best (or worst?)!
Going do follow requires more word other than posting good content. Do follow tags in blog increase traffic really but base on my observation half of this traffic are from spammers. Before I don’t have a hard time looking at comments but now with “DoFollow” I been reading comments that I think are spam for 2 hrs.

I too agree with this strategy….because proper commenting on a blog which is relevant to the topic will really help one’s site or a blog to get some link juice….i.e. backlinks.

You find right thing that it’s a automatic or semiautomatic comment posting. Sounds like a good analytic techie.

Hi, you know what, I think that guy is kinda clever but I can’t help to think what would happen if he used his powers for good instead of spam a.k.a evil. It must have taken a bit of time to write that script and that time could have been spent writing legit comments that create links that last. Isn’t that what we all want?

I do agree that many people are abusing “do follow” blogs like this, but, there are also people who are sincere in making sensible comments out of their interest on the article. The challenge for blog owners is to determine who are the valid ones and who are not. We’ll for me, I stayed on the default of “no follow’. But I’m considering changing my blog to “do follow” one. The amounts of spammy comment I’ve received has outnumbered the good ones. I manually delete all comments that have nothing to do with the topic. I like to give links, but if someone doesn’t even try, why should I enable.

You’re right. Reading and evaluating a comment personally is an effective strategy. But like the question posted in this entry, is it worth the effort? Why not abort your do-follow feature? In this way, you would not have any problem at all.
Do follow blogs are good. Its great to use these blogs. Your article contains informative material about it. Do follow blog is the best way to promote your site by adding links.
I have seen another automated system (I think it is at least) that takes snippets from other comments and pieces them together. One good sentence from the first comment, another from the next, and so on. Wow. I never knew this is possible. Now, I have to go check whether any of the comments on my blog site are suspiciously automated.
It seems nice to see one more in the do follow movement, I don’t understand why all of them still stick to the no follow as there is no reason to do so only to stop spam which can be done by many other means. Do follow not only spreads a link juice but also encourages the commentator to comment on the blog.

Hmm, I think that is quite a clever automated system as far as they go, I’m going to have to check all of my blogs for this now. I don’t really pay that much attention to my blog comments unless they look spammy, I just scan quickly. A clever way to tweak whatever software there using for the comments would be if they could spin the content that was lifted. Not that it’s a great idea to give these blackhat SEOs any more ideas. And I’m sure somebody somewhere’s already working on it.
I just started a new blog and made it dofollow, but I’m a little worried about the spam. I’ve already been hit with a bunch of garbage and I imagine it will only get worse.
Thanks for sharing this interesting trick, I did not think of it. But why so many people are commenting on others blog with tons of links? I think Google does count them, even nofollow, that’s why spammy comments are flooded. And they wont disappear until the big G REALLY ignore them.

You are right to monitors the comments. Spammers use it to post whatever they wnat on comments. I think its better to put commenting on blog as do follow for valuable comments and not spam comments.
Yeah dofollow blogs should have higher standards for commenting content. I get those on my other blog “good job I was very informed” and just nuke em. If it’s a general compliment, it usually (not always) means they didn’t read the post and just make a beeline for a free link.
I just can’t help thinking they’re sitting there with notepad open with 90 copied fortune cookie phrases to paste into a comment box

There are some spammers out there who doesn’t care about the comment but to get a backlink.
But it really worth giving a good comment in a do follow blog. It makes your backlink more permanent.

That is a fairly clever trick. I saw pretty much the same thing earlier today but not clever in the least. The post was one paragraph and they just copied the entire thing and posted it as a comment.

Do follow blogs comments work or not is difficult to say, but as you said that it works if it is clean strategy. I keep reading users perception as they are real doers. I also have do follow blog and I received 3 comments same from same bloggers thrice, so its is really good that those who deserve should be paid, here I mean those you genuinely write comment are in long run gifted with a back link. Way to go! I try to do some research too to find out which comments are genuine. I get a kick out of the fact that you can only make an automated comment sound real so a certain extent. I lot of the automated one I get say something like. “Nice post, but I had trouble trying to view it in my browser”. Others were knock knock jokes, and even worse… some straight up links. I’ve been irritated enough by others to provide genuine comments that I really mean. This is a great post. Thanks!

I own three blogs and i had never thought about that strategy before. I would also monitor my blog comments more closely in order to avoid such spam comments.
Well said. Unfortunately, with Google now placing so much emphasis on dofollow/nofollow links, it is no surprise that so many people will try to cheat the system. Funnily enough, nofollow blogs are still receiving considerable spam.
We are currently working on our new PackshotCreator website, and were considering having a dofollow blog too. However, the key with such a blog would be to enforce comment monitoring and moderation to prevent the spam that it will most likely attract.
Unfortunately, comment moderation does require resources, which we simply cannot afford. As such, the blog will have to be nofollow. This is however a great post for those who want to go ahead and keep their blog dofollow.
From my experience running a blog with a PR4, if do follow comments are enabled the spam is outrageous, and if you go a day or two without managing it, people catch on and it gets worse. it might work for a PR2 page, but once word is out you have a pr4 or higher, its over.

Truth. I think that if someone wants a backlink for his website, needs not only find dofollow blogs, also it needs to read the post and write something useful.
Because if we learn only to post links and make “spam” then… it will be the same as get Spam Emails.

I did, however, notice that a couple of my commenters were reusing their own comments, after waiting a month or so between comments. Kinda like your story, I read the comment and thought to myself that this sounds familiar?
DoFollow can be a win-win situation if commenters would just play fair.

This is so true. I too have a do follow blog and have to deal with the same issues you mention, but it also brings in good discussions on various topics.
In WordPress There is a Opt for this, but is this also the case with Blogger and the other Platforms? Yes, this strategy works for me very well. I do blog comments for a long time and can say that it really important to write an useful and interesting comment. There are 2 main reasons why:
1. To pass the approval process by the admin of the blog.
2. To get traffic form the people, who are reading it.
My advice is to do it the way it should bring you those benefits mentioned here.

There is no issue in the fact that its a helpful post and the discussion also adds to our information.
But, do blog commenting really works in adding back links as I am doing it since long time and that too in accordance to the blog commenting rules because I know that moderating comments is not an easy task and no one wants to invest time in such things that would not get them something in back.
I really appreciate the post and the comments of others that continued the discussion regarding the do follow blog comments and would like to hear some more facts in this regard.
I can confirm that commenting on dofollow blogs does work. I have watched a keyword phrase move from Google page 4 to Google page 2 to Google page one by making a few comments on quality blogs.
The key is not quantity of backlinks but quality. Two or three quality links are better than 100s of non relavant links. My business depends on dofollow, and articles. Without those few quality links my blogs would be just another domain in the sandbox.
When I first started a year ago I used Linkex as a way to get backlinks. But I soon found that Linkex is mostly used by the Adult industry and I started getting adult links which are not relavant for me and which I don’t want. A few months ago I discovered keywordLuv and CommentLuv. These are the best I have found to date and work very well.
Leaving on topic comments on blogs is a tradition that spans since the beginning of blogs.
I guess the system’s been abused down the line.
With that being said, most webmasters who allow comments on their blogs run the commentluv and keywordluv plugins, makes it easier to find such blogs in the search engines.

For me, usually i allow akismet handle everything for me. Usually those with excessive links are blocked.

It’s a shame that you offer to do something nice (offer a free backlink) and people try and take advantage of it. Yes it takes time to post a relevant comment but that should be part of the overall strategy you have for your online campaign.
It seems that many webmasters ue automated software in order to get backlinks. Usually its easy to spot because most comments just praise the blog for nice info and stuff like that. I wonder if no Google would be able to spot backlings if all the comments are the same – that might get a lot of website loosing rank.

As long as the people posting comments bring something positive to the discussion then its all good. Having a system where you need to approve posts before they go live may just deter some people from posting unrelated content.
I own quite a few blogs and in my experience it does not matter what system you use, spammers will still try to leave automated comments for the sake of back links. Thanks to the askmet spam catching system, it no longer requires very much work to monitor comments.

I might sound crazy but I tend to think that the best way to submit a comment that looks valid is to leave a valid comment.
If you give people value they are more likely to click your link.
The link then has two benefits if it is a dofollow link.

Dofollow comments are always the way forward with reference to building up pagerank. The only thing thats difficult to find is sites that have a higher page rank than page rank 7.

You have to moderate every comment if you decide to make your blog as do follow blog. Don’t let the system automatically publish the comment uncontrolled.

There’s no reason to do things automatically…there’s enough power on the big G to always check what you’re doing, not by a single manual hand – only by their systems that cover all behavior – and since spamming cannot be stopped, they obviously penalize people for doing it.
I wonder why you have your home paged marked as nofollow. Can you open my eyes?

From the perspective of the blog owner, becoming a “dofollow blog” (by installing a plugin or module) is encouraging people to comment on your posts, and actually rewarding them with a clean link back to their web site or blog. This works well, and can get you listed on popular dofollow blog lists and web sites (just do a Google search).

I think that installing Dofollow,CommentLuv and KeywordLuv plugins is the ultimate way to share some link love to your visitors,unfortunately these plugins is a spam invitation for many and i don’t talk about bots,I’m talking about real humans that don’t even take the time to read the post and leave garbage comments like “nice article” “great post”.
Surely one way to prevent spam comments would be to implement an IP blocking mechanism. I realise this is nigh-on impossible given that nit-wits out there are probably going to google your site and post some random paragraph into your blog, however the software they use has a fingerprint as they crawl your site and the dofollow sites all sit on dedicated IP addresses. Would it be that hard to put an IP or even browser check rule into your sites front controller and drop any connection that seems suspicious? Another way to prevent all that spam could be to set a minimum character/word count.
Not too sure if you’re a developer so really just throwing out some ideas for you. Drop me a line on my email if you’d like some pointers.

Lol, that is good to know. We are going to be launching a new blog soon and are contemplating whether or not to make it a do follow blog. Now I know that if we do we need to monitor comments very carefully.
BTW, I just want to point out that one of the biggest differences that I’ve noticed about do follow blogs vs. no follow blogs is this: This post was put up over a year ago and the conversation is still going. Threads on do follow blogs tend to die out after a few months from what I’ve noticed. Keep up the good work!

I consistently read about the value of link building, but I can honestly say that I’ve never ever done it [until this post - wink!].
As a company, we’ve done hundreds of SEO projects with fantastic success. Yes, there have been some links built inadvertently (like when we created new content on the client’s site and someone linked to it unsolicited). But, by and large, we’ve never tried to get links.

My personal blog is do follow and I would allow comments from anyone linking back to almost anything if they would just put a relevant comment. As soon as I see, great post, or great blog, or I really like your blog, I just delete it. It’s usually auto generated and if it’s not, they deserve to get deleted for poor creativity and laziness.
Clever strategy. I use a do follow blog myself and I manually have to look through my comments to look for spammy links. Its a hard process but required to retain my pages reputation. I’ve seen bots who create a realistic post just my posting content from relevant text or other comments found within the same blog.
It’s hard to pretend you’re not a marketer when your name links to a Locksmith site. My strategy is to make my comments so relevant and thought provoking that the author feels guilty deleting them. I’ve had situations where blog owners reply that although they don’t approve of my intent to market they still keep the comment up because it adds to the conversation. Takes longer but it’s worth it.
I have modified my WordPress blog and removed the not follow links too. I believe it is in the best interest of Google to use no follow because they want people to have low search ratings so they will use sponsored links. This generates great revenue for Google, yahoo and other search engines

That is a good catch, but i think it is difficult to find it, you just had luck, because it was you who left the comment.
i do check my blogs comments quite closely too ….. there are lots of spammers these days, i think every one should check out each comment before that goes live …

my intention in commenting in site are good. spammers have no manners. you work hard for your website and they just there to spam it.
I always read an article before write a comment. And, I agree that the blog owner must have a strategy to avoid spammers.
Back linking is time consuming anyway you put it. An option to blog commenting is guest posting. You need to contact the webmaster with an article themed to the site content but with anchor text links to your site. It is time consuming but prevents spamming and offers a good deal. The webmaster gets free content that may help his/her site to improve rankings while you get quality back links that also will help your rankings. It’s a win/win situation.
It’s a shame how people take advantage of the system by scripting automated bots to extract paragraphs from other blogs posts to use as “original” relevant comments for other blog posts just to gain backlinks. This kind of spamming really makes it hard for blog owners to keep track of good comments versus spam comments, and usually results in the implementation of the nofollow attribute. As a blog site owner, I appreciate blogs like this one, that truly are willing to trade a backlink for a decent contribution.

I’m trying to build a good blog with commenting on dofollow blogs. Is that an effective way?
Blog commenting is good, but there is also the option of guest posting on relevant blogs or websites. It is more time consuming but effective because Google likes to see links coming from similar websites/blogs.
I agree absolutely in that DoFollow is a great way to go both as a blogger and commenter.
The important thing though is always in my view, to give genuine and honest comments. Contribute positively and genuinly and if you do it makes the internet a bette rplace for us all.

I allow do follow links on my blog as well. I also allow people to use keywords like yourself if they provide a great comment that is directly related to the post they are commenting on.
As most people have mentioned, some people will always try short cuts. I suppose time will tell whether they are still doing well in the future or whether the people who do things by the book have better long term success.

I have found this happening on my forums also, we have currently turned to nofollow simply based on how much spam we started receiving that was so much harder to catch.
The other think I am seeing is bots that grab random text from say yahoo answers and post that as a reply to partially related questions.
Very crafty and very frustrating.
A good way of detecting the part I mentioned above is to actually copy the potential comment spammers post and paste it into google search between “” marks.
If you want to be specific to your site do site: before hand and then the block in “” if google finds it in that context other than that particular comment its very suspicious.
Backlinking to dofollow blogs are really effective. If only we know how google ranking works, it would’ve been easier. Though this is more challenging.

Well, I am glad some abide by do following their comments. Otherwise, SEO and link buidling would be extinct. Spammers ruin everything. Articles like this are fanstastic because they help educate the public that randomly adding links will not get you anywhere! The internet is about building relationships. Not take take take. Do following does help for both parties. Like Mike said, spammers should be deleted because that will not benefit either party!

I think if it’s a relevant link then it doesn’t matter too much if it’s DoFollow or NoFollow. I’m sure it won’t be long before Google starts to make it’s own mind up about whether to value certain links regardless of the rel tag.

Dofollow blogs are not easy to come by these days and I would not waste a valuable opportunity by using such a strategy.

I agree… getting dofollow links are getting harder and not to be abused.
I think as long as you stay on topic and actually read the article and add to the discussion, you can’t go far wrong. A large portion of my backlinks come from blog comments and very few that I write ever get deleted, because I take the time to write a unique comment every time and try to add value to the discussion.

I think this has been a healthy way of building links because when you comment to dofollow blogs you get a dofollow link to your site while you give traffic to the blog you are commenting on. So its a win-win solution and it reduces the number of spammers in the blogosphere.

I think that the search engines itself will count that as spam, seeing as it copies content from other sites, and will not give value to the link on the comment. I still would go for building (especially in blog comments) links not for the links, but for the discussion. A link back to your site in your comment would count as a nice little bonus. XD

Just a beginner on all this dofollow stuff, but I’d never “spam” intentionally. Too much fluff on the internet now (I recall 1996-the good old days). Useful comments, or at least relevant, is the way to go.

I’m setting up my newest blog as a do-follow, but I moderate pretty tightly on my wp-standard no-follow blogs too. I think it’s good karma to allow relevant self-promoting comments since I do that too (obviously), but spam is still spam.
The math question you’re using’s a great thing but I’ve found a few themes it doesn’t work on properly, so it comes back to taking a few minutes a day to read them all and decide for yourself what to allow. It’s a relatively small hassle, really. At least until you’re famous!

The “automated” comment is a problem for my blogs, though they are moderated. My spam filters catch most of the “Nice post!” and “I like your site. What software do you use?” kinds of things but, unfortunately, many automated systems post lengthier, not as obvious, comment spam.

Interesting post. Recently most of the blogs have no-follow comments and the only valid reason for this is to prevent spam.
The downside is that useful, valuable comments are discouraged and on the long run this could harm a lot the blog with no follow comments.
Especially when it is a growing one, that need the help of its readers to grow end shine.
So I think no follow comments are a very bad idea, to watch closely every comment can consume time, but it is by far a better strategy.

I always ask myself before posting on a blog for SEO if my comment is arrelavant and if I would want someone to comment the same thing on my blog. 9 times out of 10, I am happy to back link for someone IF they include good material relevant to my post. I absolutely hate it when I can tell automated bot has commented, or someone with terrible english has commented.

The fact is that do follow blogs are promoted all over the internet as a way to earn higher page rank. Some people actually sell a list of them or post a whole list on their seo website which then floods the listed sites with a lot of spam. I am a fan of the do follow as well but people should contribute more to their comments and make sure they are relevant.

There is also guest posting on other blogs which I do regularly (works great for branding), and getting links from your competitors linking in websites. If you rely only on dofollow then your website will be doomed. And yest it is very rude to not read what your commenting on and then leaving some BS one liner comment

I also get lots of comments on my blog which are not related to my post. Also lots of this comments are submitted with use of bots and automated comment making softwares, which is quite annoying.
Reading blog comments is must so only valid comments related to topics and which adds value to post are displayed.

These spam comments are becoming a lot more sneakier as time passes. I’ve been using Akismet on my WP blog with good results. I go through my spam queue once in a while and see some pretty good comments too.

I think that people who use do follow blogs alone for SEO benefits will be penalised in the end anyway.

I recently found a great Firefox addon – which is the NoDoFollow – and I am finding that a lot of the article sites that I submitted my comments to don’t actually have do follow anchor links – I feel as though I have written good content – but completely wasted my time.

That’s pretty clever. All it really does it keep the spammer from having to frequently write a ton of new comments for their bot to cycle through… but it’s still neat.
Despite the 899 previous comments I’m going to go ahead and be the 900th. Shame I wasn’t something cool like the 1,000th, I may have won a prize! Posting comments on any blob, whether it’s a do follow or don’t follow, is a reciprocal arrangement. If the post is insightful, well thought out, and actually adds value to the post then it should be rewarded with a little bit of link love. If you are just spamming for the sake of backlinks then you should not be rewarded.
