How accurate are dofollow blog lists?
Most dofollow blog lists contain blogs that are actually nofollow. If you check blogs on these lists using the SEO for Firefox extension before you comment on blogs you have probably already discovered this.
If you don’t check the blogs before you comment, I’ll leave it up to you to decide if it’s worth your time to check them out or not.
I’ve had a couple of people who have commented on this blog, questioning me about why some of the dofollow blog lists are so inaccurate.
Following are their comments:
“Hello there, I agree with the thing that is not all that easy finding real do follow blogs, I always try to search blogs related to my websites but most of the times this kind of blogs don’t seem to be do follow, so I have to search any type of blog and definitely that is not an easy task.”
“What I really want to know is why when sometimes I search for Do Follow blogs, then when I access to some blog I realize that is not dofollow? so why is this kind of blogs in those lists? That’s because the list is not updated? Or which is the real reason?”
There are three main reasons why some blogs on dofollow blog lists are nofollow.
1. They were dofollow when they were put on the dofollow blog list, but after receiving too much spam they go went to nofollow, and were never removed from the list. It’s very time consuming, if not impossible, to keep these lists up to date unless users of the lists are reporting the blogs as being nofollow to the owners of the lists.
There is also a lesson to be learned here - Always, always, always leave good quality comments that are relevant to the post.
2. The blog owner may be using a plugin like Lucia’s Linky Love that will turn your comments to dofollow after a certain number of your comments have been approved.
For example the blog owner may set the number of approved comments to be five. So, you may look at comments on the blog and they appear to be nofollow, but the person who made the comment may have only posted one comment so their link hasn’t been set to dofollow yet.
The blog may actually be dofollow but it doesn’t appear that it is. I would look on the blog for their dofollow rules, or look for references to comment plugins like Lucia’s Linky Love. Many comment plugins will have a little advertisement for their plugin at the top or bottom of the comments box.
3. They blog was never dofollow, and it was not checked when it was put on the list. I’m sure some blog owners have tried to get their nofollow blogs put on these dofollow lists to get more traffic. It’s important that the list owner check these blogs when they are placed on the list, but I’m sure some are not checking.
So, how accurate it my dofollow blog list? Unfortunately, I can’t guarantee that all blogs on it are dofollow. I do check the blogs when they are placed on the list, but blog owners can go back to nofollow and I will never know, unless a user let’s me know about it.
So, like all dofollow blog list owners, I need you to help me maintain an accurate list.
Mike

I use SEO Quake for firefox and it helps me avoid this problem. I too have found that there are alot of blogs that are on that list that are no-follow. People just want attention. And what’s with that comment above? Can we say spam!

Hi Barbara,
Yes, the first comment was spam and I have removed it. It was actually a trackback that lead to a spam type blog.
The strange thing is, the trackback lead to a short paragraph post that was an excerpt of a blog post from one of my other blogs.
So, someone is scraping content from my other blog without giving me credit of course. This is theft as far as I’m concerned and you have to be a real scum bag to do that.
FYI the comment showed up because I auto approve comments and the and then check them once a day to remove the spam comments.

i hope this site its always do follow

Blogs are change from dofollow to nofollow and vise versa all the time.
A lot of blog owners use “dofollow” they are happy to share their link juice with valued contributors.
Unfortunately, what happens is their site gets listed somewhere like on Digital Point, and they wake up to dozens of silly comments… upon seeing this they freak out and quickly change their blog to nofollow.
I think it’s a silly reaction really and good anti-spam measures installed will help out a lot…
Hmmm. I think, they’re using dofollow to get comments-”with value”, but instead they get spam. that’s why some just prefer to use nofollow.
I have found the SEO for Firefox tool extremely handy. I had been commenting on blogs that were no follow for months.
Thanks to this blog and fast blog finder, I now have more than enough do follow blogs to comment on.
So, if the lists of DoFollow blogs are not accurate, is there really a list with updated info with blogs that really DOFOLLOW?

Same as I, I’ve been using the firefox tool lately and has been very very handy lately and thanks for your dofollow advice. I will put it into consideration:)
My beef with many of the lists are that they don’t show whether a do follow site has commentluv and/or keywordluv installed. Using your name as anchor text passes very little value to your site.
If you keep a very good list of do follow sites, it is sure to attract many quality backlinks to your site.
Most dofollow blog lists contain blogs that are actually nofollow.
Thanks to this blog and fast blog finder………..!
Hey, thanks for this list! With Akismet these blog owners shouldn’t worry so much about spam when using dofollow. Although, your article did remind me of the option to set as nofollow for users with less than a set amount of approved comments. This should be set to 0 in my opinion.
Thanks!
Of the dofollow lists I find most on the list are not dofollow. I supposed they change their mind and go back to nofollow. This makes it hard when you are trying to get some quality backlinks for your site. Thank you for this post.
Through reading this post and comments I have discovered the Firefox plug-in. I’ve previously been right-click/view source method and then searching for a web-link - it gets a little time consuming. Many thanks.
HI,
i love this post caused to lots of insights from author as well reader. i got information regarding firefox plugins and fast blog finder. txs for sharing
Besides the seo quake plugin, I use the SearchStatus plugin, its quite nice, since its bundled with a few features, and sits on the bottom toolbar.
i also have experience that most of dofollow blog lists contain blogs that are actually nofollow.
I’ve noticed this about many dofollow blogs. Most of them are jam packed with nofollow blogs, but you’re right, there is no way to keep a list perfectly up to date. In any case, it’s easy to tell with any SEO plug-in that lets you highlight nofollow links.
I agree with you completely. Also, if you are using keywords, many people will not approve your post. So you could also waste your time that way.
I think it’s because of spamming. You’re encouraging us to use keywords(keywordluv) while other consider this as spam. It’s just the point of view
Well hey, nobody can guarantee their do follow blog list are 100% accurate. If you want to build your links ,we should at least check them out ourself.
I think some blog owners are actually claiming their blogs are dofollow, when they know they are not.
I just visited one site that had a complete post about being dofollow and stressing you could get a link back. But, the comments are actually nofollow. So, it’s always a good idea to verify dofollow before posting comments.
Actually i must say, i consumed my valuable time to comment on no-follow blogs. (Which i thought as do-follow). i too collected those do-follow blogs from some sites, they told those are do-follow. But finally i understood most of them are no-follow.
You have clearly mentioned 3 reasons for that.
Now i feel it is not good to believe just because of they tell, without verify again below comment.
You are right in some of way, because I have seen so many times that Most dofollow blog lists contain blogs that are actually nofollow. comment posting for blogger who have post the blog or article. And comment should related to contain. But spammer misuse of comment posting. It is not right. That’s why some time dofollow blog lists contain blogs going to be nofollow.
that is very true. lots of site on do follow list returned to nofollow.
I have found dofollow blog list but are not accurate. It also contains nofollow blog
I agree, noone can guarantee all of these blogs are do-follow or not, you must re-check it by the plug-in, dofollow comment is a very hard work.
Thanks for share:)
As stated, there can be many reasons for dofollow blogs going nofollow. Spam being a biggie, I always stress to my students to leave good quality comments. This is key, nobody wants to get junk and spam on their blog and if the majority of commentors leave good comments and forget the spammy comments more blog owners would open up. Anti-spam plugins are great and essential, especially for blogs that auto-approve comments.
Fast Blog Finder has saved me a lot of headache finding blogs to post comments on, there is a review on my site if you are interested.
You are always going to have some discrepancies in the dofollow status of a blog depending on what method you use to find it. Blog owners can change the status of their links in the click of a button so there will always be blogs changing it. This makes lists hard to manage but still a good starting point to dig deeper. Even automated tools that are designed to report the link status may not be 100% correct as there are things such as the linky love plugin mentioned above that rewards commentors with dofollow links after a certain number of posts to consider. Posting a comment to a nofollow blog here and there won’t hurt you. No, you aren’t getting the link juice from it like a dofollow link, but it keeps your linking campaigns natural and if the nofollow blog has a decent PR it could bring some foot traffic to your site from the visitors reading your comments. This is why I don’t worry too much if a dofollow blog is really a nofollow blog, I get a variety of backlinks and a good portion of them are realy dofollow so most of em count. Thanks.
