I’ve had a number of questions being asked by people commenting on my blog, so I compiled a list of the most common questions on DoFollow blog and have answered them here.

In some cases I have reworded the question slightly. In all cases I have tried to protect the privacy of the commentor.

DoFollow Blog Question:
I have submitted my site listed in “website” to 5 do-follow blog posts but I don’t see anything significant yet.

My Answer:
Submitting comments on 5 dofollow blogs is good, but it may not be enough for your chosen keywords.

I noticed on your comments to my blog you used the anchor text “keyword phrase withheld to protect the poster”. If you go to Google and do an exact match search by putting quotes around your keywords like “keyword phrase withheld to protect the poster”, you will see there are 13,600,000 competing pages. That means Google has over 13 million pages listed with the exact keyword phrase that you are trying to use.

You will probably never be able to compete with that phrase, it’s just to competitive.

Instead you need to find a less competitive keyword phrase. Of course, if you pick a keyword phrase that’s too unique, you may not get any traffic to it. So, you need to find a keyword phrase with enough traffic to make it worth your while, without it being too competitive.

I have also seen people who comment on blogs using their website address, or just their first name, or some other link text in the comments “website” box.

This is useless, since people are not going to be searching for those terms. You want to use terms that people may seach for on Google.

DoFollow Blog Question:
Can you tell me exactly what do-follow blog comments are, and why some people are mad about getting comments posted to do-follow blogs.

My Answer:
Most blogs are nofollow by default. There is an html nofollow tag that tells Google to not follow that link to the target website, and to not count it for ranking purposes.

This tag was created because people learned they could comment on blogs and get link love back to their sites. So, they spammed blogs with comments that were of no value to the blog owner, and created problems for blog owners.

I have a couple of blog posts that go into more detail on what dofollow blogs are, and their benefits. One is a serious explanation of dofollow blogs, and the other contains a video I did for fun (yes, this was fun for me – I am a nerd) that is spoof of the history of dofollow blogs .

Today, there are still blog comment spammers, but there are some good WordPress plugins that catch a lot of the spam. Plus, blog owners are wanting to do more social marketing with their visitors, and so they want to encourage them to comment, by giving them a dofollow link back to their site.

Some blog owners don’t want anything to do with allowing dofollow comments, because they are afraid they will get killed with spam comments. I can understand this if you have a very high traffic blog – you wouldn’t need to encourage comments and you could be opening yourself up for a ton of comment moderation.

For newer blogs, dofollow is great, for older very high traffic blogs – probably not so much.

BlogSpot DoFollow Blog Question:
I have some blogspot blogs. I would like to give my blogs dofollow. So, how do I insert dofollow in my blog?

My Answer:
My expertise lies in the area of WordPress blogs installed on your own domains. For information of making Blogpsot Blogs DoFollow, I will refer you to a Blogspot dofollow blog expert

Do-Follow Blog Question:
I want to learn as much as possible about posting do-follow blog comments, where do I find more information?

My Answer:
I have a number of posts about dofollow blogs, commenting rules, how to identify dofollow blogs, etc. on my dofollow information blog.

If your answer is not found on this blog, leave a comment with your question and I will answer it.

Mike

    DoFollow Blogs Q and A…

DoFollow Blogs Questions and Answers. Answering a number of questions being asked by people about DoFollow Blogs. What are dofolow blogs, so I compiled a list of the most common questions on DoFollow blog and have answered them here….

wow, this is just great :-) I mean your taking time to make a blog post to answer your commenters questions.

I think this will help many newbies like me who are still learning.

Also, I would like to add that if the blog posts are do-follow and have PR, the commenters would get a PR to their linked site more sooner than expected. Eeven if they are posting to only 5 blogs.

    Just my two cents :-)

  3. Stephan Miller from Affiliate Marketing Blog on August 11th, 2008 2:06 pm

The spam from having a dofollow blog is really not that bad as long as you have the right tools. Akismet has worked really well. And if you do get a lot of two word comments, Lucia’s Link Love will make commenters post at least three comments before they get a dofollow link. It makes a spammer work for links and they may give up.

  4. Catherine from The Blonde Diaries on August 11th, 2008 7:25 pm

Thanks for the informative post! I am still new to blogging and just recently learned that most blogs are no follow by default. I am testing out a few WordPress plugins to try and allow do follow on my blog. I only hope more people follow suit and the spammers stay back.

  5. Youtube videos on August 12th, 2008 5:18 pm

I think it was too early and very immature and may be stupid of me to think that I got a PR due to dofollow comments.

Just for curiosity I checked my other domains (with wordpress installed on them) which got a PR too. So I take back what I earlier said. i.e. dofollow commenting may fetch PR too. may be it is true but now I think with just a few countable comments it might not be possible.

great resource. going for highly competitive keywords is a touch sell. i would agree. always consider going hyper local. if your site or company is focused in a certain, city, state, region, it could give you a nice geo audience. also there are always keyword suggestion tools. feed them your competitive keywords and they will give you relevant suggestions.

  8. Removing Nofollow from Blogspot Blogs on August 15th, 2008 1:03 pm

    Mike,

First of all, thanks for the plug!

There is nothing wrong with improving your rank on competitive keywords. It should not be discouraged.

With that said however, what is wrong is if those keywords have nothing to do with the post. For instance, if you do a post on an environmental blog about new solar shingle technology and a commentator leaves a link with keywords for “Playschool Toys” — how do you think that would be interpreted?

Another thing people are doing is repetitive keyword/url linking. Same keywords and same url (their homepage). You need to mix it up. Do more deep-linking to some of your posts for instance, just like I did with this comment. I am sure if you have one or two hundred posts on your blog, surely there is something that can remotely be related to the post you are commenting on – one would think.

  9. Belajar WordPress on August 19th, 2008 10:10 pm

Yes, comment in do follow blog is very useful. However, we must have a good keyword. If we don’t know what keyword that we want, it is cannot give you significant effect.

But the main problem is to find the blogs on which commend can easily visible and allow on the keywords. Most of the blogs do not allow comments with keywords.

i’m one of those persons who would like to disable ‘no follow’ but hasn’t yet taken the plunge. based on what you’ve written here, though, it should be alright. after all, my blog’s terribly new, and hardly gets any traffic, so what few comments come my way should be relatively easy to moderate. thanks. :)

  15. whizkid from Funny Youtube Videos on August 29th, 2008 1:09 am

    I am a returning visitor :D

Thank you for writing so useful posts on do-follow blog links. And sorry for a flip-flop :D (Now I again believe do-follow blog commenting helps PR) I am just so confused lol :)

All the links from do-follow blogs has been indexed and it looks that 3 of the 5 blogs I submitted my comments were fake do-follow. (Total count now is 7 links with 5 from your blog, Thanks :) )

The good news I want to share is that my posts are now being indexed almost instantly.

I posted a story this morning at around 4:30 AM and while I was casually watching my analytics, I found that my post was already indexed half an hour ago at around 5:33 AM.

Isn’t it awesome. I see people getting crazy over getting their site indexed into google and my post gets indexed just in 30 minutes flat !!!

I have now enabled do-follow comments on my site too and would love to have people comment and get a free backlink in return :)

Just found your blog. Thanks for providing useful info about dofollow links. Misinformation is the norm when it comes link building strategies.

People sometimes get upset and decide to apply the nofollow, but the problem is that commenters are not wise and just spam blogs. If you make a contribution to the conversation, then there is no reason for them to hate the DoFollow.

  22. Term paper writing on December 23rd, 2008 2:02 pm

    Hi guys,
Let me tell you something very simple: “DoFollow” is an easy piece for spammers and a hard work for moderators if the blog is worth cleaning.
But the truth is that mostly DoFollow blogs are just traffic drivers.

  23. ke?an on January 1st, 2009 4:12 pm

Hi. Till now I’ve been using the Spam Bam plugin (http://www.thespanner.co.uk/category/spam-bam/) and it turned out to be perfect for not allowing spam.

Once I forgot to activate it on my new blog and after few days I had lots of spam. I just activated it and the problem was gone so if you need such a plugin just try it.

  26. Used Auto Parts on January 4th, 2009 2:17 am

Any and all DoFollow links will give you PR. basically the more links you have to your site, the more search engines think “hey if all these people think this is site is good enough to link to… it must be worth showing to people” this gives you page rank and helps you get ranked in the search engines.

  28. Payday Loans Bones on January 31st, 2009 1:23 am

I understand the trepidation of site owners concerning unwarranted spam but I believe that if the comment adds to the conversation it enhances the site. It does take some time to get the results you search for.

  30. DTs Flash Drive Blog on March 15th, 2009 11:02 pm

@Mike and others: I agree that it’s a good idea to vary the blog links you insert when commenting. That way your posts and articles get equal and spread out exposure. However, when I tried to do just that when I launched my blog a few weeks ago I noticed that, after having commented on a few blogs, most didn’t accept my comments anymore and filtered them as spam. I presume this is done by Akismet so I asked them to de-spam my links to specific pages. My frontpage still gets accepted for comments so it’s kinda weird but also frustrating! Anyone have any insight about this?

  31. Joan from Beach Hotels L.A. on December 15th, 2009 5:33 pm

really good information but i disagree that putting a link to your site in the “website” box has no value.

  33. lisa from fashion dresses on July 18th, 2010 6:12 am

It is true that there are phrases that are to competitive. For those phrases you will probably never be able to compete. It is better to find different phrases, less competitive.

  63. Scott from Speadmark on January 4th, 2011 3:15 pm

Blogging is a two-way street. Blog administrators can’t be too picky about accepting comments because they need new content, but commenters have to provide good content in the first place.

  65. Dan from Simple Ray on January 20th, 2011 1:19 pm

Dividing the work between guest and actual user comments is interesting because you can see the reasons that people are actually looking at your site and if they really have a vested interest in its content.

Do-follow blogs are almost an essential must now-a-days, wouldn’t you say? With everyone using the internet as a means of business, it’s kind of hard not to have something that’s courteous to other people online. It’s kind of like the “I scratch your back, you scratch mine” of the word wide web.

  72. Maggie from Managed Hosting on March 14th, 2011 12:43 pm

Do-follow blogs are a great of increasing traffic to your site; or at least, one of the great ways. However, finding do-follows can sometimes be difficult. Because it seems everyone is using the internet for business, why don’t you think more use a “Do-Follow” format?

  73. Home Security COWARTS on April 13th, 2011 9:58 am

Unfortunately Do-follow encourages spammers. No-follow is a pain for user posts though and can get just a cluttered. In a perfect world everything would be do follow and there would be no need for spammers.

You need to really think about steering this site into a major player in this market. You obviously have a good understanding of the topics everyone is browsing for on this website anyways and you could potentially even make a buck or three from some offers.
