As I go though the blogs that are up for review on my DoFollow Blog List, I first have to find a post with comments, to see if they are dofollow or not.

When you are looking for dofollow blogs to comment on, if you like to first verify the comments are dofollow, you know it can be a pain to find a post with comments.

This is a little trick that I use to find comments on Wordpress blogs.

If you cannot easily find a post with comments, add this to your browser address bar, at the end of the blog path “/comments/feed”
Example: http://followlist.com/blog/comments/feed

This is the feed URL for comments on Wordpress blogs. This will bring up a webpage that displays the comments feed in a readable format. You can then click on one of the links and go directly to the actual post to verify comments are actually dofollow.

I hope this little tip will save you a little time.

BTW, since I see a lot of Blogger blogs being added to the Followlist dofollow list, I will be posting information about what I consider to be a dofollow Blogger blog. I will also have information on how to properly set Blogger blogs up to meet the criteria for my list. Look for this in a few days.

Greast tip for finding a comments page quickly; if you seomoz or seo for firefox plugins you can instantly see if the links are nofollow.

First off, thanks for the wonderful advice! Often a scammer will claim DOFOLLOW to promote links to themselves, but then never approve a single comment! (Except sometimes their own). It can be difficult sometimes to distinguish between one of these guys, or just a very slow blog.

Also, with regards to your Blogger (and other blog) criteria, I have some observations/suggestions:

I have seen blogs where instead of linking directly to your site, they will link first to a “comment” or “User” page. Sometimes this page will say that a website URL was “not specified” – for ALL of the comments.

Other times the link to your site will be DOFOLLOW, but the link to this intermediate page will NOT – thus effectively preventing any link juice from flowing to your site.

But even if the links are OK, IMHO the use of an intermediate page which also contains links to other pages on their own site (or elsewhere), should NOT be credited as DOFOLLOW, as the net effect is to severely dilute the PageRank value passed to you, to little or virtually nothing.

Another scam is to use JavaScript to display the comments/links, so that Google never sees them. If you have FireFox and the NoScript plugin (or something similar), try viewing the page with scripting disabled, and see if the comments/live links “disappear”!

Another trick I have seen is using a re-direct instead of a straight link. Unless they are doing a straight 301 re-direct (Rex Swain’s HTTP Viewer can be handy for checking things like this), PageRank will not be passed to your site (and even then it can be somewhat iffy) IMHO, re-directing links should not qualify as DOFOLLOW.

Anyways, keep up the good work!

    Mike,

Thanks for this tip! It’s kind of funny how you think you’re the only person with an “issue”, even if it’s something small. I find it tedious (though it’s just part of the process) having to find a comment sometimes to see if a blog is really dofollow or not. I wonder if every blog has a similar trick to it?!?!

    Thanks again,

    greenlants

I was wondering how soon you are going to review your list. 50% of blogs in the directory are no-follow or malfunctioning…(((

  6. Steve from 2008 Taxes on March 20th, 2010 11:39 am

Good advice. I never considered looking at the comment feed to see prior comments. If I find a blog without any comments, I just assume the owner deletes comments or never approves any.

Nice and interesting trick for finding comment page.

  8. Do-Follow Mike on March 21st, 2010 7:52 am

    @Cottages for Holidays,

Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for me to constantly review all of the blogs in the list. That’s why I ask for your help in flagging those sites that are nofollow, or dead, so I can review them and delete them.

  9. Rajib from Bible Quotes on March 21st, 2010 8:49 am

Hey, this is Rajib. I generally use the firefox browser for detecting no-follow links and the plugin I use is SearchStatus. It highlights the no-follow links in a page in pink colour. And regarding do-follow blogger blogs, are you saying you will let us know about do-follow comment plugins for blogger sites as exists in case of wordpress sites ? I haven’t yet found a suitable one. I will be looking forward to your future posts for informations on this. Thanks.

  15. Jim from Shrink films on March 23rd, 2010 1:44 am

I reserve doubt on Blogger blogs. Simply because they can come and go anytime. All it takes is a flick of a switch and you get Blog Not Found. Recently this happened to one of the Blogger blogs that had a very well presented follow list. The guy just wiped his blog out.
