BloggingToTheBank - Make Money Blogging

You may be wondering if your blog is setup to do-follow, by disabling the nofollow attribute. Or, you may want to comment on a blog but you aren’t sure whether they are do-follow or not.

If you have your own hosted Wordpress blog, and you have not installed a plugin to disable nofollow, then chances are very good that your blog is NOT do-follow.

If someone else installed your blog, or you just want to verify that your blog is nofollow, if you are wanting to determine if a blog is do-follow, there are a couple of ways to check.

Remember, do-follow blogs really refer to the comments left on the blog. So you need to check the comments on a post to determine if the blog is using the html nofollow attribute.

The easiest, and quickest way to check do-follow, is by using either the Firefox, or Flock browser and the SEO for Firefox extension.

If you’re not using the Firefox browser, or the Flock browser, I need to ask you why you’re not using one of those browsers? It’s probably just because Microsoft Internet Explorer was installed on your computer and you don’t know what your missing.

The Firefox and Flock browsers are much better than Internet Explorer (IE). If you are doing any sort of social marketing, you really need to check out the Flock browser.

If you are using IE, I’ll explain how to determine if a blog is do-follow or not later on. Right now, let’s talk about using Firefox and Flock.

If you don’t already have it, install the SEO for Firefox extension – get the extension here. It also works on the Flock browser.

SEO for Firefox

After you have installed SEO for Firefox extension, you will see it at the bottom of your browser. You can turn the extension on and off, but clicking the SEO at the bottom of the browser – it toggles on and off.

Now, when the extension is turned on all nofollow links are highlighted with a red background.

SEO for Firefox off

So, when you go to a blog, or go to your blog, you can see whether a blog is nofollow or do-follow. Look for a post with comments already posted. Go to those comments, or to the blog post page. If none of your blog posts have comments, you will need to create a comment.

Scroll down to the comments. If you see red background on the comment name, the blog comments are nofollow.
Red nofollow link

If you are using Internet Explorer, go to a post with comments. When you are on the page with comments. right click your mouse and choose “View Source”. This will open the html code in note pad. Then select search and type in a term in one of the comments, to easily find a comment.

You will see something like the text below. Notice the rel=’external nofollow’, this indicates the blog is no-follow.
================================
<li class=”alt” id=”comment-10″>
<a href=’http://followlist.com’ rel=’external nofollow’ onclick=”javascript:urchinTracker(’/outbound/followlist.com?ref=/blog/’);”> Mike’s Do-Follow Blog List</a> on
June 16th, 2008 2:43 pm
<div class=”commenttext”>

<p>This is a test</p>
</div>

</li>

================================

If the blog were do-follow it would probably be rel=’external’. Notice the nofollow tag has been removed.

That’s how you determine if a blog is do-follow or not.

An easier way to find Do-Follow blogs related to your blog topic, would be to help me build the Do-Follow Blog Directory :-)

If you have questions about dofollow versus nofollow blogs, leave comments and I will attempt to answer every one of them.

Mike

    I love the seo for Firefox plugin, but sometimes I will double check by checking the source of the code, using the shortcut ctrl + u (on Firefox), and then I use ctrl + f , which is the find function, and I find the the name that the person left for comments. I double check because sometimes the link url might be stuffed with alot of irrelevant code, and depending on that, it may make the link not worth as much.

    I think the best and most effective way of finding out if a blog is dofollow is to look at the red strip that appears on the link with the SEO for firefox extension. Download SEO for firefox, it will make your life a lot easier, and a lot more fun.

    @PPC Marketing Dublin,

    I agree, the SEO Firefox extension is great for that.

    If you are marketing on the internet, you really need to use Firefox, or Flock as your web browser. They are sooo much better than Internet Explorer.

    I just learned about Flock a few months ago. It’s very similar to Firefox and you can use most of the Firefox extensions, but it’s built for social marketing.

    Here is a blog post I did about Flock.

    Thanks for a nice informative article here. and if you do reply to the comments then I would like to know more about do-follow comments. I have recently been hearing more about do-follow comments and learning a few tricks I have also learned how to build do-follow blogs list (supposedly, don’t have proven knowledge) which have PR in minutes. I have submitted my site listed in “website” to 5 do-follow blog posts but I don’t see anything significant (change or something w.r.t. traffic/pr ??) to my blog. What do I track ?? and how ??

    Can you tell me what is it actually for (do-follow blog comments) and why people are mad about getting comments posted to do-follow blogs. Why it is so important and how to check if something is happening or not.

    I have posted my real email address and you can send me a reply there if you can and in return I will post your blog to 50 PR blogs (do-follow) if you wish, for free :-)

    I want to learn as much as possible about posting do-follow blog comments. That’s how I got to your blog through google.

    Once again three cheers to your article :-)

    I use SearchStatus Firefox SEO Toolbar Extension to highlight Nofollow links. It has other quick utilities which I use on a frequent basis (backlink checking, indexed pages checking, whois information, etc.) Well worth a check, not that Aaron Wall’s SEO extension is bad. I think SearchStatus may be all that a blogger may need.

    nice

  31. marblehost on December 27th, 2008 5:15 am

    I used that SEO extension and i really work with it now.
    But i am getting again problems.

    That is even in this page i can see a lot of links which are highlighted.
    Ex: Home link at the top,
    And bottom wordPress, Blue zinfandel, brain Gardner.

    Now i wanna know how can you say this blog (Follwlist.com) do-follow or no-follow.?

    I am confused. I know this blog is do-follow but it shows some highlighted links……

    Please tell what is the wrong?

    Can we say whole blog is nofollow just because of we see highlighted links?

  32. Do-Follow Mike on December 28th, 2008 3:12 pm

    Marble,
    Yes there are some links on this blog that are nofollow.

    The links that you need to pay attention to on dofollow blogs are the comment links. If the comment links are dofollow, the blog is a dofollow blog and you get link love from the blog.

    Hope that clarifies it.

    Mike

  33. marblehost on December 28th, 2008 7:32 pm

    I hope you are telling about this.
    Out of 32 comments so far no one is nofollow (Not highlighted).

    Is that why this is do-follow?

  39. Realtrix - Tips & Tricks on January 4th, 2009 7:23 am

    Basically, the internet is one giant poll to Google, and each link counts as a vote. There are other factors that intefere, but we’ll keep it as is for simplicity’s sake. The more links you have, the more popular your site is – and that’s exactly what Google wants to find, the most popular/authorative sites on the web.

    The NoFollow attribute tells Google, “Don’t count this link as a vote for this website”. Whilst Google might still crawl the website’s content, it definitely does not add any link-weight. Well done, you’ve now penalized both the legitimate commenters as well as the spammers. Makes sense.

    I’ve made one of my blogs into a dofollow blog and here are my results (in comparison to a number of other, more popular, nofollow blogs that I own):

    1. More comments.
    2. Discussion. Because my links were carrying link-juice, and I was only accepting good quality comments, I ended up with proper, meaningful discussion that was pertinent to the article. I’m sure many of you bloggers only get spam and scraper comments

  40. Les from Fast Blog Finder Review on January 4th, 2009 9:37 am

    Great Post, I too spent a whole day, a few days ago, trying to figure out an easy way to find dofollow blogs. I was originally just looking at the source code for the blog post page to determine it’s link status, but that got tedious and I hate starting at code for extended periods of time. I tried the SEO extension for firefox and it’s great, love it.

    I agree that if you are still using IE you should be forced to try Firefox, lol, especially if you are a marketer. You will never go back. I haven’t tried the Flock browser but it sounds good so I’ll give it a test run soon.

    I have been using Fast Blog Finder the last few days to find and post comments to dofollow blogs. It seems to be a really nice tool. The Gold edition returns more results but the free version returns enough to get you going and on some searches it has returned pleanty.

    I try to make it a habbit to post to some high PR nofollow blogs as well as dofollow ones. This keeps my backlinks more natural and keeps things more random. There is an argument that posting only to dofollow blogs could make “The Big G” think that your links aren’t totally natural, even if they really are. I don’t know if this is true or not but as a general rule just make sure your backlinking campaigns resemble natural linking and that your comments are meaningful and helpful and you shouldn’t have any problems. Thanks again.

    Acai, Where you saw those highlighted links? I can’t see them in any comments? I think that must indicator for something else.

  76. John Rapp on June 14th, 2009 4:04 am

    You can also just right click on a comment link in Firefox and click Properties. One of the few things it says about the link is either “external” or “external nofollow.”

    Shave a few seconds off of everyone’s SEO morning routine, yeah?

  77. dan kooper from Panasonic headphones on June 21st, 2009 8:01 am

    Just a word of warning to you guys – some sites have like a fake do follow plugin. It takes awhile for the plugin to detect the link on certain websites. It will appear to be do-follow for a few minutse. but if you let it sit, you will see it to be no-follow.

  78. Daniel from Registry Mechanic Scan on July 8th, 2009 2:19 pm

    Woah, I didn’t know SEO for Firefox did that; but then, I did only stumble across seobook.com a few days ago =)

    I’m a bit of a dofollow newbie so this blog post helps alot. I’ve also just realised I can right click a link, go to properties and Firefox will whether it’s external or external nofollow =)

  79. Brian from Website copywriting on July 9th, 2009 4:05 am

    I use Firefox’s DO FOLLOW plugin and it works like a charm. Another tip I can add to this excellent blog entry: make sure the main page of the blog has a Page Rank higher than 0.

  80. Donnie from Chattanooga Web Design on September 26th, 2009 6:27 pm

    I read through the comments to make sure this alternate method wasn’t already posted. I did not see it. So, the easiest way for me is to you the Firebug for Firefox. Once you have firebug installed, you can just right click on the link and select “inspect element” and look at the code.

    You can also use Google Chrome for this as well without a plugin.

    It’s really grate information about do follow and no follow thanks for sharing it with us.

  82. Gustavo from Gadgets Tips and Tricks on October 10th, 2009 5:46 pm

    Only if I had read this post before, I wouldn’t have wasted to much time posting on “no follow” sites. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to spam. But I do feel that If I’m going to write something good, I should receive some juice in return as well :D

  83. Your Guide on October 11th, 2009 5:37 pm

    I love my blog to be dofollow but by default WP makes it nofollow. I installed a plugin to make it dofollow. And another thing is blogger nofollow by default.

  84. Mathdelane from Software Critics on October 12th, 2009 4:19 am

    I support the dofollow movement. I use the NoDofollow Firefox add-on to check whether a blog is do follow or not that’s why I don’t use the latest Firefox because it doesn’t work on it. I’m currently regulating the dofollow link juice depending on the number of comments provided by a certain commenter, that’s when I lift the “no follow” so I use NoFollow Free plugin to do the job.

  85. Franksite1 on October 15th, 2009 8:02 pm

    This is an excellent article. I have actually downloaded the plugin for Firefox and it really does help. Makes things a lot easier to find out what is a “do follow” and “no follow” blog.

  86. azzura on October 19th, 2009 11:21 am

    Great applications indeed. I can’t believe it took me so much time to find them. Thanks for the links and reviews and do keep up the good work!

  87. seo singapore on October 23rd, 2009 10:41 am

    I am using Firefox Addon called “NoDoFollow” is very useful, it will show you blue colour highlight on those links with dofollow.

  88. sticker printing on October 28th, 2009 10:12 pm

    the simple and easiest way is to copy the link and right click on it and select view source selected, there you fine whether the link is dofollow or not but later it will annoy you and you feel it tiresome then you can use firefox plug in called search status. Search Status basically not only gives you the option where you can find whether the link is dofollow or not but also gives you PR feature, Alexa feature and many others. Check it out now.

    If you have your own hosted Wordpress blog, and you have not installed a plugin to disable nofollow, then chances are very good that your blog is NOT do-follow.

    very good.

  93. Nick Bentley from Sendoutcards Sr. Manager on November 23rd, 2009 6:39 pm

    The toolbars are neat, but the chance of finding a dofollow blog is so remote. I just blew a few hours searching dofollow directories and bookmarked half a dozen to do comments on (like this one). Some of the bigger ones have a PR6 which is really impressive considering they have almost half a million comments.

    I think the lost link power is a little overrated. It just seems such a waste of time to comment on nofollow blogs, the really big ones don’t even display a link, like Gawker ones, it’s just a link to your profile with them. Yeah, not spending time on nothing any longer.

  98. Mia on December 6th, 2009 3:07 pm

    Thanks for this info. I’m still using Explorer because it has always worked for me and I understand it. But you’ve convinced me to try Firefox against and to install the SEO for Firefox extension. Previously I’ve been checking for whether a blog is “nofollow” by clicking on “view”, then “view source”, and doing a search for “nofollow”. Cheers!

    If you are marketing on the internet, you really need to use Firefox, or Flock as your web browser. They are sooo much better than Internet Explorer.

  104. karla from sell mobiles for cash on January 3rd, 2010 8:00 pm

    Thanks for the informative post, it would be easier for me to determine whether a blog is a do-follow or not to follow because I do the blog commenting all the time. It would be a time saver for me to use this, thanks for it!

    “The easiest, and quickest way to check do-follow, is by using either the Firefox, or Flock browser and the SEO for Firefox extension.

    If you’re not using the Firefox browser, or the Flock browser, I need to ask you why you’re not using one of those browsers”
    Yes the best brownser for SEO purpose is Firefox, i never use flock because i always feel its more good for social network.
    However, i don’t know my system problem with firefox, its always crash after few months, which usually make me more angry as i will loss all my bookmarks and all sorts.
    I downloaded google chrome though its very fast but not so great for SEO purpose, so i went back to IE. I searched for how to differentiate nofollow links which lead me to this article.
    This is a great useful article that worth bookmarking, thanks for seeing me through… i will download flock now and let you know what next

    Hi, well if you want to know what is and isn’t do follow a good idea is to use the SEO quake tool, Google it. However I wonder if it has spy-ware in it as in my task manger I see multiple new processes running since I downloaded it….One thing I will note is it helps you find out a large amount of info about a site quickly.But make sure to turn off the “ad spy” feature, it will slow your browsing down noticeably.
