Should I Remain DoFollow?
I have noticed the crap comments on my blog going up recently. It seems that commenting on dofollow blogs has become a popular link building strategy.
The problem is people are hiring out their blog commenting, or using automated tools to post generic comments that don’t relate to the blog post, or add any value to the blog posts.
This has caused me to question whether I should continue to keep this blog dofollow. Since this blog is all about dofollow, it would make sense to keep the comments dofollow.
But, there may come a point in time, and it may be soon, that I will have to go nofollow due to the time it takes to monitor and delete crappy comments.
Recently, one of my favorite blogs, Untwisted Vortex, went from dofollow back to nofollow due to people leaving garbage for comments.
I absolutely understand why he needed to do that, and I’m afraid more dofollow blog owners will go back to nofollow because they are starting to get more bad comments than good comments.
For now, I will leave this blog as a dofollow on comments. But, I will no longer automatically post comments and then come back and delete those comments that are bad. I will now leave comments in moderation and only publish those that are quality comments.
This may lead to a few day delay in approving good comments since I moderate comments about every other day.
If you are using commenting on blogs as a link building strategy, I will say it again – Please respect the blog owner and leave good, quality comments. Good comments will also help you improve the chances of someone visiting your site.

Are you running Akismet? That kills the most obvious spam on my sites.
I have several blogs and I get just as much spam with the no follow as with the do follow.
However, on the do follow I get some uber retarded comments like: “very nice of you to write about maken teh moniez, it is my dream to be ur long poopil.
Idiots!!
The no follow still attracts way more good comments than otherwise though. Its a balance
We have just added the dofollow pluin from word press to our blog. We have not noticed an increase in spam and even if we do, we can just delete it. It would seem to me that the benefit of discussion far outweights the inconvenience of having to delete the comments left by spammers taking advantage of the system. Maybe as time goes on, my thinking will change but for now, it seems like a good idea.
Remain do follow dude. Just put a spam blocker. Or you can always do confirmation before it will be seen.
Hi, if spam is the problem why not install a anti robot captcha? This prevents robot comments. The Akismet tool also works fantastic.
Askimet + The 1+3 = 4 Captska works good. You still have to fend of the paid Indians but some of their comments are hilarious. And If I can I will dickroll them.
btw, its time to upgrade your server, I aged 2 fkin years waiting on your page to load.
I like the one that asks what this adds up to not captcha. Sometimes you can not read the letters or image has problems.
My take on this is that spam BOTS generally do not perform any filtering or logic (it is much easier to just send off that request to the best of their ability and move on to the next target in the list), so do-follow or no-follow wouldn’t affect them.
I know you hinted towards outsourced people but the comment discussion seems to be about bots so far.
About that, maybe we should fight fire with fire and set up outsource companies whose only mission it is to moderate comments for slave wages.
you should use the Akismet. it is a very useful and handy plugin.
Use different spam control tool for your blog.
Don’t disable the do follow.it surly affect the traffic on your blog.
Thanks for the sharing.
I understand the situation, i always thought putting this plugin on your weblog was a huge increase of spam. On the otherhand, it made more “normal” people read your blog as well so i think there should be other ways to avoid comment spam. good luck with it!
I agree to sam, I just did that to my blog and it really shutdown my traffic(just a little). Just stay on do follow. BTW, I was reading an article that mentioned a word of caution in using CAPTCHAs all the time and said to use an akismet scanner in its place. What is that?
-Miyaka Yusheto
Add a captcha code to the comment boxes, that will prevent bots from automatically spamming your blog.
Yes Captcha code prevent spam.
Hm…. Yeah, I have checked some forums and it is said there that commenting dofollow blogs have become one of the successful SEO strategies.
But you know, crapy comments are comments anyways…
I have 2 blogs and both are do-follow . I don’t think it would be wise not to reward genuine person with a link back because of spammers . its good that you have enabled comment moderation . it reduces comment spam a lot
I agree it is terrible that a lot of blog owners have to revert back to the no-follow comments. I was surprised that RT made the move, but I can understand why.
I get a lot of comment spam, and chose the same route as you, moderation. It seems to work.
I’m new blogger here. I need to know how you can tell that a blog is dofollow or nofollow?
My advice is not to use KeywordLuv – it’s like a lamp for spam moths.
Once you have uninstalled that insist on not allowing keywords for a name, and then just delete the comments where people ignore that rule.
Your right, it would be silly writing about dofollow and having a nofollow blog!
Dofollow is so painful for blog writers. I know that. In contrast, I guess Dofollow brings more traffic to your blog. So, it’s up to you to weight the pros and cons.
One effective way to prevent scam comments from auto-robot program is to enable captcha.
Getting a high traffic is one of the advantages of having a DoFollow blogs so I guess that’s a great opportunity. I know its hard to detect a legitimate comments from a spammer but Akismet and Captcha did a great job to filter spammers besides you can do the moderation.
I think….It is not a great deal to make your blog No Follow….it is important to have WordPress Plug-Ins which will put all the spam comments to the Filter…..and also If some one is commenting without any relevancy to the topic….and doing it just to have backlinks then automatically they caught by the spam filters…..and become No Follow….
Generic comments are pretty easy to spot and delete. Remember that dofollow comments draw in a lot more readers. And whether they’re here to read your posts or just to get a backling it doesn’t matter. They’re reading your stuff and clicking your ads.
I also have a do follow blog but to lessen spam comments I added Akismet plugin. It is quite tiring to moderate but this is the least you could do to keep your blog attracting traffic. Actually comments keep your blog and posts alive. Do you think if you will shift to no-follow people will still visit your blog and read your posts? Most probably some will still follow your posts to read on quality articles but definitely it will decrease.
I think having Plug-Ins like Akismet can be beneficial to get rid of those spam comments.
it is not necessary to have No Follow blogs…because it Do Follow blogs are valuable to commentators as well as for the website also….as it provides commentators with something they are looking for…
Hi,
Getting a high traffic is one of the advantages of having a Do Follow blogs so I guess that’s a great opportunity.I always thought putting this plug in on your web log was a huge increase of spam.
Thanks .
Question is without dofollow How many people comes here?
I think reward for comment is always good. As we know every internet giant company first offer reward for using their network including google. For that you can check wayback machine in early time of google, google give reward when people search on google.
Yes, I agree with your statement that commenting on dofollow blogs has become a popular link building strategy.
But I still respect the blog host, I will read their article before comment
Hi,
It is not necessary to have no follow blogs because do follow blogs are also valuable to commentators as well as for the website. It provides commentators with something they are looking for.
Thanks.
While I agree where you’re coming from, the sad truth is that if you make all the comment links nofollow, you’ll get much less comments. Obvious, I know. Thing is, you’ll lose more than those spammy comments, which might still be appearing after that anyway, since you’re apparently in some spammers database …
Use spam filters and stay dofollow, that’s my advice.
Hi,
I think that if you remove the dofollow than Your traffic surly decrease.Don’t remove the dofollow.it is a reward for your commenter.
Thanks for the post.
Hi, I agree with you. Those who comments must do it relevantly. Making a blog dofollow or nofollow is a choice with its own ups and downs. I just hope that you have enough time to filter comments.
Your always going to have spammers, there is just no way around it unfortunately. And I believe having a dofollow blog brings more traffic and you do get some of the unique content you wouldn’t get from that free traffic if you went no follow. I guess you need to make the decision if you take the good with the bad or if you go no follow to thwart all spammers and risk losing some of your free traffic and content. Just my 2 cents
I think moderation and Akismet can help you to fight against spam. Dofollow backlinks must to be a reward for those people who add value to your posts with their comments. When I post a comm to a blog, I usually check if this blog is dofollow looking in source page, because I have seen a lots of blogs that are using KeywordLuv, but they are nofollow.
We were the creator of the Do Follow List of Lists which have been removed from our site due to abusive behavior by many.
There are solutions to stop bot comment spam a good choice is the Bad Behavior plugin. We were getting 200 spam comments a day or more. Now it is maybe 10 or so.
There is little that you can do for the paid comment spammer other than moderate your blog. We require a 20 word comment for a link these days. While that doesn’t stop comment spam, it does encourage other to leave better comments.
I agree with Robert moderation and askimet help a lot against spammer, but i also suggest using CAPTCHA, because with moderation only even with askimet sometime you have to moderate more than 100 spammers a day. it just doesn’t worth the time you spend to deal with those spammer
I think it would be unwise to go to no follow considering your blog is about the do follow movement. Your site is an authority for the do follow community and if you have to resort to going to no follow then I don’t see the reason anyone should have a do follow blog.
I have several do follow blogs and I knew comment spam would be a problem, you can only expect that but with askimet and the small amount of spam askimet lets by it is fairly easy to moderate.
Don’t let the spammers win and ruin it for everybody. Keep up the good work.
Hi,
Spam comment are really big problem today.Their is no solution for the problem You can minimize the effect by using the spam filter. If you have a blog you should face this.
I do not understand people who just spam dofollow blogs as their links will be removed and there is no any value in it. So, why don’t we just comment with a sense?
Please remain do-follow if you can, I think its important not to let the spammers win – its nice to give people a pat on the back for writing a decent comment that is related to your post and adds something to the discussion. I have do-follow blogs though so I understand the fustration with moderation useless comments
I hope all blogs switch to do follow so we can all get high pr.
I use the same set-up as you on my blog, do-follow + keyword luv. For me it is a way to give something back to my readers/ commenters, yes it is a lot of work to moderate all the comments but I think it is well worth the effort. I call the big no-follow sites like twitter and wikipedia graveyards because they only want to take link juice, but don’t want to give, becoming so a graveyard for bots and spiders ;-( BTW, I am also using a plugin that allows commenters to subscribe to specific posts and their follow up comments. I think it encourages people to come back to our blogs
SY
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subscribe-to-double-opt-in-comments/
You’ll always get spammers but please try not to let them win – I think the dofollow movement is great and if done correctly provides benefits to the site owner and person writing the comment. Its such a shame a minority spoil it for others (I sound like my mum!)
What I don’t get about spammers is that 90% of their effort in leaving spammy comments is wasted – their comments simply don’t get approved. Why wouldn’t they just do the right thing for everyone (and probably the best thing for themselves) and leave quality comments?
I get a lot of comment spam, and chose the same route as you, moderation. It seems to work.
Moderation is pretty much the only weapon any of us have on doFollow blogs. I love doFollow because it provides a service to the reader, but spammers can get out of control.
Curious… has much been written on the amount of comment spam nofollow blogs get? On my blog, I was dealing with comment spam before I knew what nofollow was, and now that I’ve turned it off, the comment spam doesn’t seem to have increase any (not yet anyway). It’s not really that much anyway, not hard to deal with (thank you, moderation and Akismet)
Well considering your blog is focused around the do-follow blog movement, it would be quite hypocritical to turn your comments no-follow.
I agree with you though, some people really try and take advantage of it.
What you can do is not approve any comments that look like the person never even fully read your post.
As others have mentioned, I don’t see why you would move back to nofollow.
After all, you can filter out any comment you find inappropriate… I have just switched my blog to dofollow because it makes sense to me to reward people who add value to my blog.
Spam comments, or links to crappy websites? I just won’t let the comment pass through! No problemo.
Regards
I battled with this do follow issue as well. I run a few blogs and the do follow one does get a lot of crap comments not even related to the topic I’m writing about.
I just moderate heavily and use akismet (over 17,000 spam comments so far, crazy)
The way I look at is that more comments = more content and that is always a good thing.
Steve
DoFollow blogs are loved by lifeless spam bots. This can be a very irritating aspect of making your blog DoFollow because even though you are trying to reward your commentators, but its a good way to increase traffic to a blog as many bloggers or site owners to leave comments on your blog in an effort to earn some extra back-links. If a blog is made DoFollow, its really a marketing point!
It’s too bad that blog owner had to go back to nofollow due to crappy comments.
A few (or perhaps many in this case) idiots who could not take the time to read the blog post and make good comments have hurt the rest of us who do make good comments.
I always try to leave good relevant comments. It doesn’t take that much time and I don’t want to waste my time by writing some short junky comments that will probably get deleted.
Plus, and this is a big plus, if you leave good comments you have a better chance of someone visiting your blog.
Please keep dofollowin!
Mike
Even though link building is one of the reasons for my commenting even I am annoyed by the stupidity of some comments. I like to think comments like ‘nice tips, helped a lot’ appear everywhere not only because of hurry but also because these people don’t know any more English than that. But I might be wrong. I think you should remain dofollow and explore the possibilities of fighting these comments. Than you can share it with the rest of dofollow community
.
I know you hinted towards outsourced people but the comment discussion seems to be about bots so far.
About that, maybe we should fight fire with fire and set up outsource companies whose only mission it is to moderate comments for slave wages.
actually sometimes dofollow is good sometimes is bad ..
but the better idea is if we use dofollow i guess we will get more traffic isn’it?
i don’t really know bout google disliking biut dofollow ..
I agree it is terrible that a lot of blog owners have to revert back to the no-follow comments. I was surprised that RT made the move, but I can understand why.
I really appreciate when people make their blog do follow. It is just the way to unite people with the same idea and have a good boost in ranking.
I’ve just added the dofollow and KeywordLuv plugins to my blog in an effort to get more readers and a better community going.
I thought long and hard about whether it would worth the effort to deal with the spam comments having read so many posts like yours.
I’ve decided to give it a shot anyway and see how things go. If nothing else I should get a few laughs form the paid Indian Commenters.
Untwisted Vortex is one of my fave blogs as well. He’s a retired Marine who lives in the Philippines. Great blog on living overseas, culture, and everyday living.
As for your blog going NO FOLLOW, just turn on Akismet and manually approve the comments. My blog is DO FOLLOW and its not being crushed by spam. Make sure to approve only comments that actually ADD to the conversation.
I think DO FOLLOW blogs are WIN/WIN if handled properly–you get original content, the commenter gets a link.
I’ve spoken to RT from UntwistedVortex and I can understand why he removed dofollow. It is too much to ask for serious link builders to be a bit more ethical?
Yeah you really have to maintain being Do Follow, cos I am sure a lot of viewers and commenters will visit the site and make comments on it.. That is one way for you to get good traffic as well.
So many comments about do follow or no do follow blogs, for me our aim is the same ” mutual-benefit”. We do win-win solution, but of course the spam comments should be removed by Akismet plug in or by any other way ( using comment-moderation way first ) before published.
I’m still very new to all these SEO, and yes do-follow-blog-commenting is some technique that definitely stood out as being affective yet tedious and sometimes raising a moral issue. Nevertheless, win-win i guess, it’s a circular world we’re living in.
Askimet works quite well for me, I’m very happy with it. Sorry to hear your having troubles though, I’ve considered switching my blog but am very hesitant to after reading many horror stories. I’m still on the fence.
I know it is frustrating and time consuming to get the spam. I hope you keep the blog as dofollow. I do enjoy your posts.
Quality is just what we should aim at and commenting with a sense is just the right way to be beneficial. We all need to make spam useless and start living and tend to respectful information.
Do follow blogs help to make back links. Back links are helpful to increase traffic to the website. Thanks for the post!
I believe you guys know that you should not do too many do follow blogs commenting in a day. You may end up in the google sand box.
Your post and advice really encourages me. But i have that does Google will index backlink for our site that comments from dofollow blogs, which links are not related to the blog post?
Yes it’s sad that many bloggers are changing back to nofollow,it’s also because of the increase in human spammers I guess, anyway thanks for holding the nerve and still being dofollow.
In my experience, I’ve had just as much spam both as a dofollow and nofollow. Honestly, in the end, its traffic that drives profits, not a bunch of spammy links.
There’s a ton a spammers out there though that do nothing but post “hey great post” or “thanks for info,” I try to delete those ASAP
There is just as many crappy comments on no follow, versus do follow. However, a comment is a comment. Even though this is a pointless topic.
Use a human verifying tool to stop automated comments.
For people posting spam maybe there is a tool which allows the blog admin to ban ip addresses for spam and 3 posts before you can get a dofollow link.
I totally agree..comments should relate to the post even if you are link building.you don’t want to have your comment deleted
It is frustrating to see blind comments that have nothing to do with your post. You spend time thinking about the topics to discuss and what you’ll get are random messages by people who are obviously spamming. What do they get from it? Is it really an effective link building strategy? With a crappy message, how will it ever work? Just use a spamblocker.
If a blog is a dofollow site, many visitors wants to post their links because they know that they can have a valid backlink from your site however, dofollow attracts visitor and spammer. But if we use captcha and/or moderate comment also use akismet I think this can make the blog safe.
When I was with Blogger it seemed like I got more spammy comments than with Wordpress. I do let some slide by though. Almost feel sorry for people who write, “This blog is great”, just to get link exposure.
I just recently learned about ‘do follow’ blogs and am finding all of this fascinating. It has become like a treasure hunt, trying to find do-follow blogs that I can link to or refer to in my own blog posts.
Interesting post.

“Good comments will also help you improve the chances of someone visiting your site.”
All it takes is a minute to post a quality comment so anyone can do this, especially those who are eager to have some organic traffic directed to their site. Automated comments are right to be deleted since they contribute nothing to the discussions in the blog.
I think that if you remove the dofollow than Your traffic surly decrease. Make sure to approve only comments that actually ADD to the conversation.
“I will now leave comments in moderation and only publish those that are quality comments.”
That is a good idea to keep spam out, but it can be time consuming. But still, spam does not negate the advantage of dofollow for me.
“Please respect the blog owner and leave good, quality comments.”
Unfortunately, not a lot of commenters see it that way. You just have to keep weeding them out and keep the good ones.
indeed increase the traffic to one way that can be used is to change a blog do follow. but often we get comments that do not comply with the posting provoking. I hope this comment does not include a category ugly.
I agree with you. Those who comments must do it relevantly.Making a blog dofollow or nofollow is a choice with its own ups and downs.
Great idea but it requires your further involvement. I had the same problem with my blog and because that I put nofollow.
“Recently, one of my favorite blogs, Untwisted Vortex, went from dofollow back to nofollow due to people leaving garbage for comments.”
Spam comments are really a problem for blog site owners nowadays. However, reverting back to no-follow would also have negative effects.
I am familiar with do follow blogs. One advise when you delicate your do follow blogs, you should also show them how to find do follow blogs. I find by downloading the seoquake helps. Esp we on the line-thru icon. and on every comment we can see whether this is a do follow or no follow blog . Thanks for your great article.
If you really want to give some link love to your visitors than use dofollow, but don`t tell it to anybody.
Submitting blog to dofollow directories and lists is mistake, because great part of spammers comes exactly from those places.
Thanks for sharing! Going through this aspect would be a good way to build up knowledge… well for me, I like DoFollow on my blogs, for the reason that I feel like I am giving back to the blogosphere.
Akismet is a life saver for me despite being do follow. I never want to be in a directory though and I do delete posts that make it through and don’t relate to my content!
I think that dofollow is a good idea, and in despite of spammers the blog always will be visited by webmasters posting a positive comment. I have seen many times garbage posts on nofollow blogs.
i agree with you. some commenter comment even without reading the article, which is not good.i think do follow is just great and this is a wonderful blog .i generally keep commenting here regularly.
Mike,
Like quite a few of your commenters I’m also new to the do follow movement & have just installed the necessary plugins to my blog. I must admit I’m a bit wary after hearing about the growing trend towards returning to no follow, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed it can still be a win/win situation. I’m definitely going to moderate first & may be quite ruthless with the delete button.
I don’t normally like rules, but I do like the fact that you are clear about what you expect from commenters. I hope you can keep your blog do follow, but I do understand why people go back.
Now to quote some of my favorite spam,
“Dynamic informations I shall now visit this blog every day”;-)
Ok, not every day, but I’ve learned something & I will be back.
Many Thanks,
Lucy
yes, first, maybe you should use the Akismet,I use it for my old blog,it does work well.sec, somedays ago,I used do follow auto comment tool, but It doesnt work well,as you said not related blogs!!
Again it seems that spammers have ruined a good thing. Dofollow encourages more people to comment, increases reader participation, increases traffic, but in a way it also increases the amount of spam. It seems you can’t have one without the other =/
Still, at least we know that spammers comments will be deleted anyway, so they’re just wasting their time =)
do-follow will defintly help you bringing visitors to your blog , but you’ll have to spend a lot of time avoiding spammy comments
From my experience, if you leave in the most minor of exploits on your site, someone is going to take advantage of it. Its in the nature of the internet.
Leave your blog do follow and accept that people will use it to boost their sites. If you hate that very notion, they kill it all by making your blog no follow.
Thats all I can say
Remain do follow dude. Just put a spam blocker. Or you can always do confirmation before it will be seen.
I suggest you to remain dofollow. Dont worry about spam, you can use blocker. Dont loss good comments.
You can always use recaptcha (as far as i know it’s the best one) but you should check with dofollow thing i think. You have a nice blog – people are searching for dofollow through google – and i’m sure there are a lot of visitors here from google searches
Won’t moderating all the comments add a lot of extra work? I also agree with those that suggest using captcha to prevent spam bots. Nevertheless, it’s about time that webmasters focus their time and effort elsewhere. One good link from a relevant high PR site is worth more than 1,000 comments on greybarred comments pages. What a terrible waste of time and effort.
Leaving your blog do-follow is a great way to reward those who post comments on your blog. Don’t you think your loyal readers should be rewarded by allowing them to backlink? You can just manually delete meaningless comments every now and then.
dofollow blog comment is attract people for commenting on blog ..so now a days most of the people use “nofollow free” Plugin in blog.
Spam comments are really a problem for blog site owners nowadays. However, reverting back to no-follow would also have negative effects.
If you are doing your own moderation why dont you keep dofollow? Changing links is also useful for you too. Just erase spammy messages unless you do not want to loose your popularity
i know what you’re saying it can get very annoying having to delete lots of spammy comments from people who take advantage of the dofollow blogs. But at the same time, if all blogs went down the route of nofollow then it leaves fewer options for those who perhaps don’t have the budget to pay these SEO companies lots of money for link building.
I find askimet and captcha help reduce the number of spam comments i get.
cheers
Use spam blocker or something, captcha, askimet, just to name a few..just stick to do follow bcoz it is easier to find thru google search, and for the spam, you can just delete it from time to time, no sweat..
Do-follow is a gift for original commentators who read the articles or blogs give their opinions. sometimes few original commentators are also paid for this that their comments not approved due to spam protection. My blogs are do-follow it creates traffic on to the blog.
this is article is very informative because I learned some new things how to stop spam on the blogs and why do-follow blogs are better than no-follow.
very good article to learn new things on do-follow and do-follow blogs comments.
At that time I removed the “no-follow” tag from comments on this blog as a way of saying a small thank-you to reader who took the time to comment. Feedback is always welcome and appreciated.
While this has lead to a little comment spam, the majority of comments are on topic and relevant. So I have been prepared to remain with status quo.
In keeping with the principles of the DoFollow movement I like to keep up with what other blogs are writing in the home business niche and make a contribution if appropriate.
There are over 200 blogs to cover, so just loading them into an RSS reader isn’t that useful.
What I eventually did was create a Google Custom Search Engine which allows me to quickly search all the DoFollow blogs by keyword. This very quickly throws up posts relevant to a topic of interest and displays them in order of importance.
I think you should remain with this DoFollow blog. It can many benefits for the owner of the visitor whos commenting on your post. And of course you’ll get more traffic to much because your nice doFollow blog.
hii
A- blogs/sites which give u an option to ad ur web link in comment field
B- blogs/sites which give u an option to enter ur email, web adrs etc info in the specific fields above the comment field while u r posting comment but not in the main comment body
C – both A & B r do follow
If you are using commenting on blogs as a link building strategy, I will say it again – Please respect the blog owner and leave good, quality comments.
Leaving your blog a do-follow one is a great way to reward your loyal followers. Aside from this, it could also increase the traffic to your site. I’m bothered by spammy comments too. Although, I make it a point to visit my site regularly throughout the day and remove irrelevant and meaningless comments.
Captcha doesn’t prevent 100% boot coments but it is good start. I think that there must be some limits which will prevent short comments like “I agree” or “Nice post”
Interesting reading. There are so many blogs that have gone nofollow. I personally believe that is due more to the blogging software upgraded “default nofollow” status.
But those of us that are in the know, understand the advantages of going back to dofollow. Yes, drive by commenters are a pain, especially when most of them don’t really speak the native language of the blog… (those are funny). I installed TanTan Noodles and it took care of 100% of the bots, but I still have the single sentence “nisce post” comments that I delete.
What REALLY is annoying are those that say they are “do follow”, but are actually “nofollow” (they hide their code). Maybe a list of those should be started?
Thanks!
Beale
I definatly think you should stay dofolllow. You are really helping alot of people out, it is just a few that is ruining it for the rest of us. You can always just choose the option so you have to apporve each comment.
I haven’t really seen evidence of NoFollow reducing the spam and bad comments on any of my blogs. I would definitely stay DoFollow.
Just insist that anyone who comments, stay on topic and say something that is worthwhile. If not, then their comment will be deleted.
What do you think?
Should you remain a “do-follow”? I guess you should. Keeping your blog a do-follow is a great way to reward your loyal commenters. You can just manually read the comments and delete spammy ones.
I guess you should. With the advantages of having excellent plugins like keywordluv and commentluv most of the spammers are kept at bay. Do follow is a good thing which attracts visitors to your blog provided we update our blog with fresh and niche content. My blog also uses keywordluv and commentluv wordpress plugins and I find monitoring and managing the blog a hassle free process.
Regards,
Mack
Should you remain a do-follow? I guess, yes. If you worry about spammers infesting your blog, you can just regularly check the comments and delete those you consider spammy.
Dofollow is important for every website out there. it really helps to have them, it would be very sad to slowly see them go away and hopefully yours wont go either. Followlist.com is trully amazing, keep it up
Nice and informative post do follow remain Just put a spam blocker. Always do confirmation before it will be seen.
Actually comments keep your blog and posts alive. Do you think if you will shift to no-follow people will still visit your blog and read your posts, thanks for this post….
definately i also agree with quite aa lot of actually i thihnk a dofollow blog helps us increase our knowledge as one have to fully read each n every comment so that he can give appropriate comment related with the blog, and therefore by doin this he comes across many new websites n opinions or ideas given by the other commenters,so infact n a way dofollow are beneficial n lot of ways..m i ryt..hope so
What I eventually did was create a Google Custom Search Engine which allows me to quickly search all the DoFollow blogs by keyword.
hi there i was just surfing the net when i came across your site, please keep do follow ,why let other people spoil it , spam is a pain. Just put a spam blocker. Or you can always do confirmation before it will be seen.
Hi,
I recently made my blog dofollow so I am particularly interested in this post. I think the only way dofollow can work is by moderating and having a strongly enforced no-nonsense comment policy. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out on my blog.
Hi there! I agree with you. A person who comments must do it relevantly. Actually comments keep your blog and posts alive. Do you think if you will shift to no-follow, people will still visit your blog and read your posts? I don’t think so. By the way, thanks for sharing such a nice post with us. Keep on sharing such a great post. Best regards for ahead.
I just recently learned about ‘do follow’ blogs and am finding all of this fascinating. It has become like a treasure hunt, trying to find do-follow blogs that I can link to or refer to in my own blog posts.OK Thanks
I’ve just recently changed my site from “nofollow” to “dofollow”. Haven’t seen an increase in spam yet but I’m sure I will soon.
You will definitely get more people to participate in your blog by remaining “do follow”. My input would be to reconsider adding some form of Captcha and see what happens. Will it will not eliminate the spam, it will most likely reduce it significantly.

In my opinion I think you should get some type of spam blocker and keep your blog a do follow blog. That way everybody wins when reading and posting comments on your blog.
Maybe you should add a captcha instead, or maybe moderate the comments to make sure theyre at least relevant and worthwhile
I think that even if you switch to a no-follow blog type, you will still be swamped with the useless comments that you are getting now. Sooner or later, blog traffic will grow even more and no-follow blogs will be a victim of spam as well. I think you should stay do-follow for sure, and not just because I post on blogs
Nice and informative post once you have blog you have to update the news… so that only it is more effective.
Nice and informative post … i really enjoyed ur post keep up the good work
Remain do follow? Of course you should remain do follow. CommentLuv has done wonderful things for my San Diego real estate website. I think it’s great that people are encouraged to share when the blog is do follow. It doesn’t hurt search engine rankings, and it increases the popularity of the blog.
Stay dofollow. I thought there was a plugin that filters spams away.
Akismet will not protect the blog against the SEO spammers, some use seo-automated programs like Comment Kahuna etc. Better approve the comments manually to avoid further problems.
I always respect your blog man. Please keep your blog dofollow and put one spam blocker plug in like Akistem. It will help you for blocking spam.
I will always try to make valuable comment on your blog.
I am highly recomending to you that you should remain a dofollow follower it is very helpful for your sites and blogs. I can give you some tips on it just remain for being dofollow. Thank you for sharing this..
Keep it do follow. It encourages more discussions throughout the blog.
You can go with blog commenting to get Quality back link. Don’t spam on blogs while doing comment posting on it. Also Posting forum with signature to your site, you can use social networking and Social Bookmark that’s the great to get traffic to your site also increase Google PR. Good luck.
Hey Mike,
Amazon’s Mechanical Turks is a pretty good way to build a lot of comments by posting a job like that. At .50 cents to $1 per completed comment (and you can set the parameters to get paid) you’ll get takers. You can also set the quality score you’ll accept to get the better people who’ve completed jobs in the past.
Since they contact you first, you could assign a certain relevant blog to each person to comment on. Of course with the record unemployment it might be easy to find someone on Craigslist who can do a good job as well.
Nick
I definitely agree. It takes a lot of effort and much of your time with those crappy comments. These are the main advantages of a do follow blog. Still if you wanted to increase your traffic, I guess you just have to make comments in moderation, it’s a win-win strategy. And not to mention, there are still people making sensible remarks.
Yes, I agree with your statement that commenting on dofollow blogs has become a popular link building strategy. but we should also post some good comments positively for some informative purpose…..
definately i also agree actually i thihnk a dofollow blog helps us increase our knowledge as one have to fully read each n every comment so that he can give appropriate comment related with the blog, and therefore by doin this he comes across many new websites n opinions or ideas given by the other commenters,so infact n a way dofollow are beneficial n lot of ways..m i ryt..hope so
I always have one question in my head regarding dofollow blogs. Does it really help in increasing PR? Most bloggers use dofollow because they want to generate more traffic (by giving free backlink for those who comment), but if a page has too many outbound links, doesn’t it in fact decrease the PR?
I have the same question in regard to how much posting actually helps your PR. I always like reading do-follow blogs as I read interesting stuff and if there is a blog that I care to comment on…I know that I am getting some love back. My personal blog is dofollow but my professional blog is nofollow due to too much spam.
I always try to leave good relevant comments. It doesn’t take that much time and I don’t want to waste my time by writing some short junky comments that will probably get deleted anyways.
I’m new blogger here. I need to know how you can tell that a blog is dofollow or nofollow?
I like to keep my blog DoFollow since my blog is associated with the web design and SEO theme and Dofollows do attract people to comment. However, spam is a problem, and whether or not the blog is Dofollow, there will always be a spam problem. I use as many spam filters as possible, but some spam always seems to get through. Therefore, there will always be a need for moderation.
Use Akismet
and the spam will gone.
Really cool tool
Amit.
I think it is unfortunate that many spammers are filling up these comment boxes but it really hurts the ones who are genuinely interested in your conversation. For example, I wouldn’t want to give my two cents because I’m working hard at my linking but I do appreciate something nice that comes along, including your post and who knows, maybe this way you’re reaching out to more people who wouldn’t regularly come across this.
You say, “It seems that commenting on dofollow blogs has become a popular link building strategy.” as if this is a new thing! Its almost expected you are going to get some crap eventually.. you should just delete those people, or computers. If there were smart link builders then they would right something valid to say and therefore everyone wins. They get there do-follow link and you get the nice comment and trafficking, BUT of course those people have to ruin it for the rest of us.
Thanks for sharing this great article. I totally agree with you, I’m also having problems with my blogs about spam comments. Anyways, there are tools there that can help you fight unwanted spam.
Wow I literally just posted a comment on how people never read posts because they are all too interested in getting the backlink from do-follow blogs.
Its quite a shame because people and spammers like that ruin it for everyone else. One blog I knew of that was do-follow switched to no-follow because of the spamming issue. It was very sad for the rest of us that liked to write relevant info and still get the backlink. I just don’t understand why people cant EVEN SCAN the post and write something useful. It doesn’t take any time at all and by writing relevant comments its most likely you’ll get your do-follow backlink. But no. People that write crap, “you’re so great, love the post” that have to ruin it for EVERYONE.
Akismet has helped me a lot to keep my blog from spam. I think you must use it, especially when you are using keyword luv plugin.
Yes, I agree with your statement that commenting on dofollow blogs has become a popular link building strategy. but we should also post some good comments positively for some informative purpose
You will definitely get more people to participate in your blog by remaining “do follow”.Thanks a lot for a bunch of good tips?I look forward to reading more on the topic in the future.
Although being a do follow is quite a task, it also helps in your link building strategy. Somehow, it has that positive and negative effects, has advantage and disadvantages. On the other hand, it’s just a matter of balancing things. And for the comments to be approved, it has to be sensible enough to read in relation to the topic.
Wonderful article, thanks for putting this together! “This is obviously one great post. Thanks for the valuable information and insights you have so provided here. Keep it up!”
dissertations
The reason i find this site is my search about dofollow blogs.
So being nofollow is a little nonse.
But you are right about the spammers.
Sometimes they dont even read the header of the post and start posting under the article.
Like “it was good great share added rss bla bla bla”.
In a way you are right but your domain will keep you dofollow i think
I prefer to monitor comments on my blog and read everyone to select those comments that are useful than comments being automatically being posted.
Just saw the comment before me .
))
Thats what i meant about spamming
It’s true that people like to comment on do follow blogs in order to get traffic.I can understand how you feel but i would also suggest you to keep your blog as dofollow. The strategy that you have adopted is good enough.A bit of delay is fine.
Yes you should remain a do follow. Although it requires more time and effort in putting in moderation all those comments, it would reward you back by generating that traffic. I must admit, it is tedious.
Spammers are major concern for any blog post. They want backlink rather than giving any constructive idea. But you can implement captcha to stop automatic submission.
You know the more better way to stop it.
Spammers should be treated as they deserve.
But dont switch to nofollow. If webmasters like you close the dofollow blogs then blog comment would lost its importance from SEO point of view.
Dofollow Link building is a right way to increase the web page quality. But sometime we use blackhat tech.for increase our website quality but after that ourwebsite quality is going to down.
Thanks Mike for the article.I learned useful information about do-follow blog comments.I would go for captcha to stop spammers.
I think Do Follow is ok. I notice that you use CAPTCHA to filter comments, that’s great!.
Perhaps you need to moderate and read the comments carefully before you approve it.
Nice blog anyway
I agree that there are some great plugins to stop the completely spammy comments. Do you require people commenting to have at least one approved comment before they automatically appear on the blog? That tends to make it easier to decide who to approve and who not to approve.
I know this post is quite old, but I personally think that it can encourage more discussion if you give back to the readers with a dofollow link (obviously only if they are legit).
I use dofollow on my “proper” blogs and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Of course, if it got to the point where I was being spammed regularly, I might change my mind…
please remain dofollow. Your blog is one of the most wonderful places to visit.
The post was really good. Thanks a lot.People mainly write on Do Follow blogs to get links and that’s why many a times one has to come across crappy comments too. Thanks a lot for the discussion.
Being a do follow would help you generate that traffic. And even if there are quite spammers who would try to leave remarks that are not relevant to your topic,it’s just a part of being a do follow. In order to gain, one has to make simple sacrifices. Although, it’s up to you if you remain or not. But I suggest taking hold onto it. It might help you soon as you’re helping us now. Thanks.
You should probably just tell people that their comment will be deleted if it doesn’t contribute to the discussion. And what constitutes a good or bad comment is completely up to your fancy.
Great!
I didn’t realize the comments could have been made dofollow and no follow. Well, I’ve also made all my comments as dofollow as per the guideline provided here. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.Really i got more information about do-follow blog comment.
keep it up!!!!
I know its hard being a do follow. It would require you more effort than being a no follow. But being a do follow not only help you as well as others. If you’re considering the benefits you’re getting by remaining a do follow, then you’re likely to be getting the most of it. Other than that, you’ll only have to bear with the spam like we all do. Thanks.
It is quite tiring to moderate but this is the least you could do to keep your blog attracting traffic. Actually comments keep your blog and posts alive. Do you think if you will shift to no-follow people will still visit your blog and read your posts? Most probably some will still follow your posts to read on quality articles but definitely it will decrease. thanks…
I do not understand
I’ll take a look to the
Before posting comment u have to use spam code for confirmation. Thanks for sharing your information.Really i got more tips about do-follow blog comment.
Awesome post. I got to know a lot about do-follow blogs. I must appreciate you for your excellent post. Thank you. Keep posting.
Hm.. Im telling you that I had change my bloger HTML to “dofollow” and guest what… People start to give their comments. Unfortunately, most of it is meeningless!
I have some spammers but well, they didn’t get pass akismet. And my business site has recently improve in SERP after I change to dofollow. Wonder why.
I must admit I’m a bit wary after hearing about the growing trend towards returning to no follow, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed it can still be a win/win situation. I’m definitely going to moderate first & may be quite ruthless with the delete button.
Do Follow blogs to get links and that’s why many a times one has to come across crappy comments too. Thanks a lot for the discussion.
The best way to avoid being labeled as a spammer is to do a little research on the blog on which you are about to comment. Look at articles with comments, and see if there are comments where the author uses keywords as their name, or if all of the comment authors are using real names. If the site has a comment policy, be sure to take a read through it as well. Some DoFollow sites have an added bonus of Keyword Luv – this is where you can enter Your Name @ Your Keywords, and they will use everything after the @ sign as the anchor text for your website.
Another way to avoid looking like a spammer is by taking time to comment on a site. Instead of posting many comments all at once on several posts, try only two or three, then bookmarking the site to return to later. On a similar note, do not use the same blog for multiple websites – most blogging platforms show the IP address of the commentator, so if you post three comments around the same time with different author names and links, chances are the blog owner will notice.
I moderate all comments on my blogs. If it doesn’t read well, ie. on-topic it never sees the light of day. Even most of the back-links on the comments on this post are nearly useless because the keywords are so general or misguided. Does no one perform research on these first?
One more point: the spam-bots seem not to care any more about nofollow status. They seem to traverse and populate blogs wholesale. Some of them are malformed gibberish with links to non-existing domains with random generated letters as the anchor text. I think the strategy is if you spam 100,000 blogs a day, you’re bound to get a few hot ones. I’d prefer a moderated approach that lets the owner choose the “best of” comments and the others would auto-delete after a chosen number of days. End of maintenance time wasting.
yeah, I’ve been seeing a number of people looking to hire someone to do their dofollow blog commenting. my suggestion to you is to use spam blocker hope that will work for you…!
Great blog post on the CommentLuv plug-in and how it can be abused. Link building is definitely a huge part of building up your blog online, and I’m personally of the opinion that Google tends to show a little bit more favor to blogs that have comments and conversations going on. So I still do it.
You’re right, always I was thinking that it is not fair that people take advantage of the dofollow blogs, because anyone enter in the blogs and puts some stupid thing and then he win a backlink.
We need always to publish something of value as you say, because is not fair that some people come to our blogs and say things like “thanks, good post” and as a writer we need that the people says something with value, that make some question or at least that the message have life.
I also agree that people should not give links without discussing on the topic or without giving any valuable suggestion. They must participate or discuss on the topic. Giving fake comments just to stay in the comments for link is not fare. I must say that blog owners must delete those comments.
I like to spread my link in different blogs but before doing this i read all the post and most of the comment then I comment on the post. In this way I participate in post as well I get a back link.
I think many blogs are debating this. On the one hand you get many more visitors and discussion on your site with do follow but you also get an increased amount of spamming as well.
Its great to get do follow links but Google is smart enough to know whether we are over optimizing the site. Its better to get links from follow, no follow, anchored texts, brand name…. every link matters what Google loves is diverse links.
yeah, I think u should make this blog dofollow.
U can always filter each comment before it appears on this blog.
You discussed about bad commenting and you let more of them to post over here. this is problem of all blog owners create a blog and not keep it un noticed. this became a major help to spammers.
You are still doing right by the people despite your misgivings. At least give it some ‘link love time’ before you pull the plug!
