What are “Do Follow” blogs?
“Do follow” is the opposite of “No-Follow”. Wordpress blogs, by default, use the HTML nofollow attribute on links that point away from the blog. This no follow attribute comes into play with the posting of blog comments. The no-follow tag tells the search engines NOT to follow the link to any other web sites.
The logic behind using no follow is, it’s good for the blog since there will be fewer outgoing links and therefore less “link bleed”, leading to better Google page rank. Sounds good!
Using no follow also makes sense because there are blog spammers out there who will, and have, posted blog spam comments solely for the benefit of getting more incoming links to their site, which helps page rank. That makes sense!
Do Follow blogs are going against the norm and turning the No-Follow tag off, enabling do-follow of out going comment links.
Why Go Do-Follow?
If you’re like me, you want people to comment on your blog posts. You want more of an interactive community. That’s what Web 2.0 is about – community, relationships, and user created content.
But, how do you encourage people to comment on your blog posts? You give them something in return. You give them an outgoing link to their website, when they make a quality comment on your blog. You also allow the search engine to follow that link to their website by using the do follow attribute.
You also need to let people know that you are a Do Follow Blog. Some visitors will have no idea what that means, but those who do know what it means will appreciate it and will often leave a comment.
You will notice I now have a Do Follow notice in the upper right hand column of my blog. This graphic is courtesy of Randa Clay who is a Do Follow advocate. I’m letting others know that they are welcome to leave relevant comments, and letting them know what my expectations are.
Okay, but what about comment spammers?
No doubt there will be spammers who try to take advantage of your generosity. If you have a blog you probably are already getting comment spam, I sure do. But, I have found that the Spam Karma plugin does an outstanding job of filtering out spam comments.
You will still need to monitor comments, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes each day.
How Do I Set Do Follow?
Unfortunately, the option to turn No Follow on, or off, is not an option in Wordpress. I have looked at a couple of plugins, and have decided the DoFollow plugin works best for me.
With the current Wordpress blog comment spam plugins now available, I see no reason not to be a “Do Follower”.
Once you join the Do-Follow movement, let everyone know your blog is do follow by adding your blog to the do-follow blog list.

Do Follow is great but unless you control it – you will get abusers. I recommend you have a look at plugin “Lucia Linky Love” – it will allow you to automate process and set Do Follow on links that deserve it.

How important is keyword love anyway? Won’t just a link do?
We are puzzled about the no follow attribute in Craigslist. It is our belief that virtually all links placed on Craigslist will be annotated by Craigslist software with the no follow attribute. And therefore Google typically does not give credit for such links. But on rare occassion, Google does give credit for such links. This is good, but we wonder if there is some particular aspect of such links that Google likes or whatever to give such credit.

it’s true. to get a little love in this world you have to give a little, and that’s the promise of “do follow” to blog commenters. as long as you have “do follow” on your blog you can expect people to help grow your site both in content, and in popularity. also, use of the KeywordLuv plugin, as on this site, helps a great deal.

The way to find out if a blog or web site that you can comment on is is “dofollow” or “nofollow” is to find a comment, right click it and look at the properties – it will tell you in there.
Don’t forget if the blog you are commenting on has a low or no GooglePR it wont add anything to your link building strategy AND if the site or blog has loads of comments the strength is diluted as well.
The PR might rise over time but then so will the diluting.
There’s a great website I know for finding out the strong dofollow blogs and sites your competitors have left comments on.

We have constant floods of spam, but they are usually caught by our filters. From what I’ve read it seems as if Habari does a better job of catching spam than Wordpress does, so that could be the reason. It’s nice to have the filters because I really like the feedback and discussion but hated having to wade through all the nonsense to get to them.
Mike thanks for your generosity. I have been reading so much arguments on “nofollow” “dofollow” these days. Does dofollow really hurt the pagerank like “link bleed”? Honestly, nobody (except Google) knows for sure how Pagerank calculations work, that is just some speculation as to what hurts a ranking. But I believe people should be rewarded some credit in return for their contributions.
Well, in either case, you can still call it spam. Whether the visitor IS interested in your blog/post and comments with interest or not and just wants a link. In other words, it depends on the blog owner himself/herself whether (s)he is willing to appreciate the comments and accepting the links in exchange or just as a sign of appreciation, simple as that. If not, then by all means, removing the ‘URL’ field takes 2 seconds! Google that out. Don’t leave the URL and then judging people for spamming, most are not spamming, they post with interest and once they see the option of leaving their website URL, why not?
I’m all for DOFOLLOW or just remove the URL field! Don’t leave it with nofollow, that’s more a trick in making some people comment without interest. So anyway, all for dofollow,

Good article, it explains things well but, as a newbie, I wonder about the timescales involved. I made my blog, Architecture with a capital A, dofollow two weeks ago and despite listing it in most of the major follow directories, there has been only a modest rise in visitors. Still its early days yet and I’ve become a committed dofollow blogger.
I use a little bit different of an approach to this. I use the nofollow reciprocity plugin.
http://www.inverudio.com/programs/WordPressBlog/NofollowReciprocity.php. Basically if the person commiting has a follow site, then the link is follow. But if their site is nofollow, then their link becomes no follow. A tit-for-tat approach.
Nofollow tag itself can help blogs ranking well through major search engine if only blog owners do understand that they can use it for a powerful on-page optimization within the Site’s Internal Link Structure, not by just using no follow attr on every single outbound links.

I couldn’t agree more with you, Do Follow links are necessary, of course you may have a hard time deleting the spam messages (specially those that area garbage or offensive) but in return you will get a community that will keep coming back to your site.

@Rachel Clarkson, You are very right and I think it is even easy to handle all the spam with wordpress comments plugins. We can use combination(s) of any of them to prevent spam. I think bloggers should give benefits to legit users.
For those of you dofollowers looking for spam protection- my best advice is to install Akismet and put comment moderation on for any first time commentator with a link in their comment. This has been very efficient for me as it still allows people not posting links (or return commentators who are posting links, but I know aren’t spammers) to get instantaneous comments.

Being an avid motorcycle fan I own several motorcycle related blogs and websites. Getting anywhere in the search engines requires that I get back links to my sites. This is all good but its not just links it is links from webpage’s that have relevance and authority. Some say a link is a link, but the content from where the link comes from is important. I think that dofollow links are the best thing since sliced bread, however if I link build using dofollow commenting, I try to hunt out blogs that are relevant to my website to link from. I also try to ad relevant content to the comment. This is beneficial for the blog as well as my link.

Do follow is good thing. But i just frustrated with the spammers who hunt good dofollow blogs for their link building.
I am new to the SEO world and I found this article helpful. Not sure that’s true anymore, I think linking out to good quality sites is actively beneficial with Google’s latest algorithms.
Does wordpress still not have a pluing installed with it that makes the comments do follow, or do you still have to download that plugin?
i think do follow is wonderful plug in to install to your blog because it will get a lot of traffic and work for link building as well.
As long as it is not abused, I can see where it might encourage user participation. Sadly, it seems that most site still do not use Do-Follow.

Dofollow is a win, win for sure, it provides us (as commenter’s) to receive a good back link to our website (as long as we leave useful and on topic comments) and it provides the recipient of the comment some brand new fresh content for the search engine spiders to crawl and index, plus the ping effect comes into play if you have a wp blog. Personaly I felt the introduction of the nofollow atribute was an error. I think it has had a detrimental effect on the web comunity as a hole. All links should be dofollow, it benifits the web comunity by creating a voting system, nofollow undermine this.
I agree with Mike. A blog without community is dead and it won’t hurt if you give your users and lifeblood of your blog a dofollow backlink.

Ive noticed over time many of the dofollow blogs remove the dofollow feature.
This is very handy to know as I am always looking to increase back links with other similar sites to my own. It is frustrating some sites have the “nofollow” tag attached to links, as all the links on my site use the “dofollow” rule. Will look into this a bit more soon

Most of the blogs are now converting to no follow. I do not know the exact reason of doing that, but one obvious reason is spamming. Blog owners are scared about it and hence is willing to make the process more strict. Also the link bleed is a valid reason. may be not strong enough but enough to make the blog get converted to no follow.
All of my blogs are DoFollow. I agree with you, I think the positives outweigh the negatives of spam. There are a number of tools like Spam Karma and Akismet that help eliminate most automated spam and some human/manual spam, but actually reviewing your comments before they are approved IS the best way to stop spamming!

While I’m a firm believer in the do-follow movement, I also feel that it’s worthwhile to also acquire some no-follow links as well. I think a site that only has do follow links would probably seem a little un-natural to Google versus a site that has a mix probably appears to have much more natural links.

Interesting post, i have heard about dofollow blogs and other sites before but never thought about it this way as a link building method.
I wonder if dofollow is a good idea for site with PR1. Will it drain out my site PR? But Might consider using KeywordLuv…cool plugin
I used to belong to the old school of having all outgoing links as nofollow. After much reading, testing, etc., I made my last two sites dofollow using the Keywordluv plugin. The first site had more comments, and in about a month, had a PR 2. I did no other linking other than one link on another PR 3 site to be picked up by the SE, and then made about 5 or 6 comments on other dofollow blogs. Needless to say, I am now a firm believer in do follow.
Spot on about dofollow or rather not nofollow being web 2.0 and that is what it’s all about after all what is the internet without it?
after reading your blog, all my 6 blogs were updated to do follow and just submitted the links here. though i havent seen the results yet but am still happy i was able to know the importance of a dofollow blog.

Do follow is a great plug in to get a lot of traffic and for link building as well.I have installed this plug in on my blog and i can see the change in traffic.
My blogs PR has stayed the same, but I’m not too fussed I’m getting a stack of traffic and some interesting well written comments as well, so dofollow blogs keeps me happy.

i think dofollow blogs are very crucial things when it comes to SEO since dofollow blogs give maximum backlinks which may be very useful in getting traffic.

Nice information about dofollow blog. It is like a wiki page on this topic. I find it hard to manage dofollow blog with karma plugin too. Maybe, we need a better plugin to help us run dofollow blog.

do follow blogs are quite simple they allow the pr from the particular site to be passed on as relative to the site with the link on. if you click on my site above you will find that this is a do follow blog allowing user to utilise my page rank

I don’t know why people were so worried about not following in the first place. Google always valued sites and linked out anyway. Do follow has always been a good thing.

Excellent idea to go dofollow buddy. I have been doing it for years with different blogs and have found great success. People are way more likely to leave comments and comeback if they know they will get a link from your page.
Do follow links do exist but you have to look, but I feel it is a shame that all links are not do follow. It would encourage a lot more moderation from webmaster – that must be a good thing.

Great post! I agree “do follow” does encourage people to leave comments, but like you said you will attract spammers so you must keep an eye on things to keep them from getting out of control.
I see you use KeywordLuv which is also a great way to encourage comments along with CommentLuv.
I think this is probably the begining of something much bigger. Most Governments want to regulate the Internet more. They realize many people are earning a nice living and not setting themselves up legitimately.
What these people fail to realize is that by going legitimate they help weaken the argument Colorado used.
I have recently changed my Blog to do follow and wrote an article on it. Both actions have been well received. So I would fully support the logic of the DoFollow community.

Hey mike thanks for writing out this simple guide on no follow blogs and especially how to setup word press blogs for no follow. Most people do not know that there is such a thing as follow/no follow and therefor almost all word press blog are no follow sadly.

I understand that some sites post icons (like yours) to indicate that they are Do Follow. But are all sites that ask for Comments and ask for your name, e-mail address and URL Do Follow?
Also, what if your site lists a blog as Do Follow, but I suspect it is a no Follow. I wouln’d mean to falsely report it, but it may look that way since I’m just learning about Do Follow-No Follow blogs.

well, i will be using this dofollow plugin too (for some test period atleast) because althogh it will increase traffic and comments amount, but it will also greatly affect the quality of comments and thus quality of content on the site.
I think do follow blog is great. If you want to get something you should give something. Nothing is free in this world basically. So do follow blog is win-win for both commentor and blog owner.

Those are great wordpress plugins, particulary Keyword Luv. I’m surprised that so many do follow blogs haven’t bothered to upload KeywordLuv (it took me a while to figure out how, but I’ve just done it). It’s great because it lets commenters benefit from keywords while still using their real name. I don’t like it when people comment on blogs and just use their keywords in the name field, and no ‘real’ name

I do some commenting on dofollow blogs, and I see a lot of comments that I would consider junk comments. On a blog like this I’m sure it’s difficult having to work through all the bad comments.
It doesn’t seem to make any difference whether or not you have a dofollow plugin installed as far as the amount of spam you get. Some spam is directed at the blog owner, rather than readers because the spammer know that their comments would never get published.
The only real way to keep a do follow blog under control is to moderate it. However having an interactive community will have a whole heap of benefits such as keeping your pages fresh for search engines to crawl.
There are so many blogs out there that are all trying to attract an audience and comments, that by rewarding your commenters by value-add such as making your links do-follow, you’re guaranteed a better chance of attracting visitors and interaction with your blog.
Rewarding your readers will have them coming back for more. That is old and sage wisdom, which will always hold true.

I think your research is right. Do follow blog links are always helpful in PR increasing and also helpful for traffic but no follow are only helpful in increasing traffic.
Truth is that neither do follow and no follow are used in a good way right now. What we need is a way to automatically/manually determine if a particular comment will be a do follow or no follow. It can be done but it can be time consuming and you should have a pretty good idea of what your doing with html to pull it off. For instance if I have someone who’s posted 10 times to my blog and no post set off the spam filters then I am more than happy to give them a do follow link however if someone is making their first post then it should be no follow. Saying and entire blog is do follow or no follow is not the answer

I was reading about the do follow blogs and some of those articles like yours encourage people to join the do-follow movement and some of them says about the spamer and that the Google don’t really prove the do-follow movement idea(I still cant understand why is that but a lot of articles treating about that). Sadly the number of do follow websites are getting lesser and lesser. this is because of the massive spam attacks from unethical SEO who just leaves generic and irrelevant comments that doesn’t contribute to the discussion, I just hope that things will change to keep the internet community healthy.

Yes, useful comments should be rewarded with links. You may gather a few dedicated readers who will comment for free, but as you said, most people want an incentive to post to your blog.
For a new website, having a DoFollow site would be beneficial for a boost in traffic.
But there are many popular nofollow sites like Techcrunch which seems to attract millions of hits per month. Maybe, once you are established, then having a nofollow site shouldn’t hurt too much as you won’t be leaking any ‘linkjuice!’

I am pretty much a technical idiot. I know what a do-follow blog ans link is, but I have no idea how to tell if a blog or link is do-follow. Not even my own! I guess I will have to contact my webhost to find out? Unless someone can tell me how to figure it out.

Honestly, nobody (except Google) knows for sure how Pagerank calculations work, that is just some speculation as to what hurts a ranking. But I believe people should be rewarded some credit in return for their contributions.

Spam sucks but do follow links are really helpful for people who are actually out their interacting with other people in their field without having to spend lots of time working on “professional” links with other sites.
There is no such thing as “free” today. If you give something for free, of course you expect something in return. There are certain bloggers who are “no-follow” bloggers like Brian SOlis, a known marketing strategist. “do-follow” bloggers are for starters like me =)

a dofollow blogs tells the search engine to follow the links thus gaining inlinks from that particular site. If you are working on your google pr and you want to rank higher in google search results you’ll need to get a quality inlinks or backlinks to your site from site having higher google pr.
Allowing dofollow encourages and rewards visitors to get involved and increase the overall value of blogs, interaction is the key

Yes, but when the blog is Do Follow isn’t going to loose it’s PR if it has a high one? Because as far as I know when a link is added, the pagerank is spread to more sites and it kind of flows out? Correct me if I’m wrong.

You will still need to monitor comments, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes each day.
do follw blog means in coding part it will follow the attribute. it can give back links to domain.

DoFollow blogs are hard to find but they can be like gold dust when you do find them. They can make up a huge part of your SEO campaign but you should never rely 100% on this kind of link. Alot of blogs will be abandoned or removed al together. When you do find a Dofollow then leave a relevant comment as the site owner has given you a big helping hand.

Ah, I didn’t know there was a NAME to this until now! This is usually what I do on my blogs – allow a post with website as long as they are contributing. I didn’t know about the whole “do-follow” and “no-follow” thing, though. This is really good to know.
I really don’t MIND when people leave comments with self-serving links. Hell, I do the same thing. But they have to con-tri-bute! Especially with one of my blogs – I would love for it to become like a community.
